Wasn't aware this was the common practice used to pay players.

An appearance fee is a standard clause in an SPFL contract. Doesn't necessarily mean either that they have to use it or if they do use it that it's more than a token additional payment but it's certainly very common. I'd think getting on for half the professional players in the country will have some sort of appearance top up in their contract. It's possibly more common with the lower leagues where playing can make a significant difference to the wage.
