Aww come on! You try summat and....

That whole scene is brilliant, when he stands up thinking Neil has finished and then having to sit back down, then checking his watch, it's the beginning of the end for the Brentmeister general, doesn't help that his opener is...

I'm not gay, in fact I can honestly say that I've never come over a little queer.

Mr Spock is half vulcan, half human.

Anyway, discussion time - is Neil a good guy or a w**k? I generally lean towards good guy who is a dick to David because David is generally a dick and an irritant towards him, however his friendship with Finchy suggests w**k.

Neil, for me, is somewhere between the two - but probably more the former. I'm sure I can recall an interview with Gervais where he said that Neil is the only 'main' character that viewers should actively dislike, and I think his justification was that the job means nothing to him compared to what it does to David - but I don't think I can agree with that analysis.

Neil is handsome, charismatic, popular, competent, seemingly quite happy and stable. We can't really criticise him for having these attributes. Basically, he has everything that David wants to have but so painfully eludes him. Deep down, I think Neil actually understands this and has a degree of genuine sympathy for David, but mostly - and understandably - decides against indulging his ridiculousness, even if he will occasionally tolerate it.

He is human, so it would be unfair to criticise him too much for having a dig back at David. After all, what reasonable person wouldn'have the occasional pop back at David in Neil's shoes? He also voluntarily passes up several opportunities to openly ruin David in front of his staff (after the cricket incident, for example).

I suppose where I have most reason for doubt is in the Christmas specials. He begins to verge on outright nastiness and vindictiveness without significant provocation ('No dog with you tonight, David?', etc.). This is a step beyond most of what we see in Series 2.

Regarding his friendship with Chris. On one hand, Chris is a terrible, terrible person and Neil must be intelligent enough to know this. It is possible, however, that Chris is also intelligent enough to tone it down a touch when in Neil's company compared to David's - additionally, the power dynamics of the relationship will be completely different. It's probably a different 'type' of friendship, too - I can't see Neil voluntarily heading down Chasers with Chris, for example. We also don't have much reason to believe that Chris isn't competent at his job, so it might make hard-headed sense for Neil to indulge him in a way that he doesn't have as much justification to do for David.

I think it was John Lennon who said ‘life is what happens when you’re making other plans’. He also said ‘I am the walrus, I am the egg man.’ So I don’t know what to believe.

I bought the official script books a couple years ago for a few quid on Amazon, and the first few pages are the emails between the BBC producers and Brent setting up and arranging the filming of the documentary series. It's basically David trying to ensure he gets full editorial control, routinely forgetting that the documentary is about an office and not him. They're incredible, on par with some of the funniest bits of in the series.

I also think that Neil seems like more of a dick in the Christmas Specials but at that stage he’s supposed to have seen David lying to Tim and Gareth about Neil slagging them off etc and is probably totally fed up of David hanging around the office post sacking and post compensation claim!
