ClearScore Protect is a free dark web monitoring service we provide to all of our users, for free, as part of a ClearScore account. Every three months, we'll privately and securely run a scan of the dark web, monitoring for any stolen passwords associated with your ClearScore registered email address.

It seems legit but I'm always wary about anything that is offered as free. It's provided by one of those credit checker websites so do you get spammed by them looking for business once they've got your email address?

Sounds interesting. Somebody recently posted a link to a website that did much the same thing; you input the email address you use for logging in to websites, and it tells you how many times the address turns up in lists of details stolen from various companies. Pretty much everyone on here who tried it was immediately, "BRB - changing passwords"

If I remember right, most of these hackers are after access to your email address so they can spam people on your contacts lists, rather than to try getting your bank details/website logins. Goes to show how many people get hacked that you can have had your passwords in the public domain for years, yet nobody's worked their way through to your account.

Its obviously being offered as a loss leader to get you to sign up to their "protection" service but, yes, you'll also likely get bombarded by them trying to sell other stuff

I used it on the app on my phone. Hoooo boy I changed passwords on a couple of accounts after that! I've got two factor authentication whenever its possible so I think my bank and outlook account have always been safe enough. My password for P&B wasn't compromised at least, so Div must be doing something right (or at least hasn't hit a point where he's selling off all our login details to shady fuckers.)

tbh I've only noticed the odd email from Clearscore in my linked account; when ive used the app it does kinda go "do you want to look at these cool credit offers" before you can get into the dashboard but its not too bad and at least makes sense for a credit checking app.

I mind a few years ago my Betfair account ended up with multiple logins all across eastern europe which ended up killing off my fledgling interest in online gambling. The phone call was quite funny because the other end of the line went completely dead for about 15 seconds as she had a look through, proper "oh shit" moment before I got put on hold. I'd turned about £50 into £110 or so after about a month of betting, so luckily it was more just a low stakes "for fun" account and I didn't lose much there. They gave me a full refund after a wee while too and I'd changed my login info + set up authentication but I just took the money out, lost any enthusiasm for it after that faff.

Pretty eye opening as to the shadier side of the internet, too. I also got a message from Google about my Gmail account a couple of years back which basically amounted to "by the way, someone just tried to login to the Gmail account we have linked to your phone, but it was from France and we know that's not right, so we've frozen your email account until you review your security info" which was a bit scary although there's not really much anyone could have done with that account anyway. Have got two factor authentication on my gmail now too.

tl;dr two factor authentication can be a very good idea indeed.
