Virtual Season Ticket

Recommended Posts

Motherwell have said that the streamed games will essentially be free to their season ticket holders, since they'll be guaranteed a discount on next year's ticket, proportional to the number of games they've missed this time.

Well aye 😂

But what I mean is I imagine many would hold off on buying a season ticket for next season just now based on the fact they may not be able to physically use it until next year.

This allows them to buy one knowing it would be useful in August either way.

I could maybe have worded it differently tbf 😂

Aberdeens sales were higher than at the same point last year and that was before we knew they would be used to watch games online.

The clubs 10% donation from directors to charity may have had something to do with that I doubt it would have made a massive difference.

I don't know about other clubs, but at Accies a season ticket worked out around £18 a game.
The idea of anyone happily paying £18 to stream, for example, Hamilton v Ross County through a single video camera is nuts.
You make some great points tbf about queues though. Moving the crowd at a reasonable pace is a challenge. Cash gates are the obvious bottleneck, and I imagine all games would maybe need to be all ticket to limit crowds. Perhaps clubs could introduce print at home style tickets and consider opening and scanning these at the exit gates to attempt to make things as smooth as possible.
Cash gates all but non existent in the Prem (every game at Saints been all ticket since the new stadium was built) but queues still exist to buy tickets so needs more take up of smart cards and mobile tickets which again most prem clubs use now. Should not be difficult.

Same with Motherwell.

The club posted an update on the OS last week:

Quote

Over 2,000 of you have already got your tickets for the campaign, far surpassing sales figures at this stage in normal years.

A previous update after 3 weeks included figures for a bit of context:

Quote

"Our season ticket sales continue to move apace. We are fast approaching 1,500 purchases after just over three weeks, with fans continuing to demonstrate their commitment to the club in uncertain times. This compares to the 327 season tickets that were sold after three weeks last year. Our message remains the same – please buy if you can afford to, but only if you can."

Good idea, fair play.

I'll be interested to see how County manage to implement this, considering how far behind the club seems to be when it comes to technology. They have shown zero interest in introducing any kind of live streaming service before.

I think the press box only got useable WiFi this season and the club have issued season tickets on smart cards since 2012, despite their still not bring a single electronic turnstile in the stadium.

There's also that time they deleted the entire club website.

I'm excited if ICT do some live streaming given some of our hot content on social media and our website over the last few years. I can already see the stream cutting out halfway through a game and suddenly some porn comes on in its place.

Noticed a couple of posts on Twitter about the 'virtual season ticket' particularly in relation to Keith Jackson's latest face-palm of an article.

Specifically these:

It's a great point and kind of highlights a broader issue with the league in so much as you have clubs/owners who seem to be either resistant to or don't see the value in investing in tech - @Sherrif John Bunnell hinted at how behind the curve County are a couple of posts above.

The idea that the sort of streaming package being touted by the SPFL is in any way "futuristic" is absolutely wild. Having listened to a fair amount of discussion about that sort of stuff from people like Burrows and a handful of other CEOs who see how far behind we are in comparison to leagues like MLS and other sports it feels like there are people in the game who see the value in terms of streaming media, content and access - it'd be good if the whole situation could generate some sort of conversation about how the Scottish game improves on that side of things.

Outwith the OF, Hibs and Aberdeen, fans would be able to socially distance inside stadiums no bother without greatly (if at all) impacting the gate.

Thinking practically, is this actually possible for all clubs when you consider not just seating arrangements but fans queuing to get in, going for a pie and going to the toilet?

I've not been to all current SPFL away grounds but when I was at Livingston in March, it was a case of going through the turnstile then you've got the food counter on the right, toilets on the left and door to go out to the stand in front of you, all pretty tight and enclosed.

Maybe fans of other clubs can comment but I don't think it's as simple as having a fan every 3 or 4 seats sadly.

A lot comes down to pricing.

Aberdeen are selling ST's at going to the match prices (around £20 a ticket), so if you can stream an individual game for say £5 then why would you get a ST from a value for money point of view.

They can't realistically charge £20 to stream an individual game and similarly they can't sell ST's at streaming prices as it fucks over the 6,500 who have already bought ST's. Bit of a dilemma but they will still be depending a lot on the goodwill of fans.

Clubs will need to give season ticket holders goodwill back ,fans who prefer to go to games will always go.
The problem for clubs as we all know is they rely on that gate income,
For me it would be crazy to limit the amount of people watching the games BCD's
Having games on at different times will boost the income for clubs if it's done right through club TV.
If SKY want a percentage of the club TV dosh they could provide a better service than just having one camera.
Pay per game for fans without season tickets is a market that clubs can't afford to overlook.

There should be a camera on the back of every season tickets holders’ seat. I will only participate if the view is the same as from my seat.
I've seen complaints on exactly this from people on Facebook etc. I pay around £150 more than my dad as I've got a much better seat but we'd both get the same view from a virtual season ticket. This doesn't really bother me but it's another excuse for people to moan.

Aside from the utter shite highlighted above, the interesting thing from the Jackson article is that he says discussions are underway about selling streams for away games to fans on an individual game basis. That would appear to suggest that the notion of a cap can't possibly apply to non-TV games.

Rugby Park would probably be fine. Rather than using the turnstiles we could open the massive big gates and let fans in through those instead (going even further still we could stop people at the outside gates of the ground (there are two in total) and only let them near the stadium if they have a ticket. There are a decent number of stairwells and toilets inside the stands. Also plenty of food kiosks, but these could be closed anyway if there was a big issue.

Aye - am I right in thinking that it was the Guardian's golf correspondent that was the source of the "cap"? It seems ridiculous to wilfully restrict potential revenue - others are probably better informed than me in terms of backend tech but can you even cap streams like that?

I posted in our general thread earlier but the statement about the virtual season ticket yesterday seemed like it the broader details are still being established. The announcement yesterday looked like it was designed to pre-empt complaints from supporters who have already paid for their STs.

The cap is true, it's been reported by Livi staff members as well. Although it does seem like madness that's just going to drive people to piracy, so I honestly don't think it'll last.

This is clearly still early doors for this, so everything is subject to change and I expect what we end up getting will be more sensible than the nonsense being mentioned today.

Will Rangers TV still be covering away games like they've always done  (fee to home club) or will  you be buying virtual tickets from the home team?

I'd hope they were still doing the games available to buy for folk *ahem* outside the UK.
