More Americans died in this attack than they have to date in conflict in Afghanistan so I wouldn’t say their gun obsession makes them completely impervious to attack.

Nice try.

Jet fuel doesn't melt steel beams though.

Checkmate.

The word militia is in the constitution so calling them that gives them some sort of justification - a wee boost that they're protecting freedoms etc. They absolutely fucking love being called militias

The bit they miss out is "well regulated".

Why would he care if it's against the law?

He breaks laws all the time. No-one holds him to account.

I think it was documented that the handsome generals with better bodies than Tom Cruise weren't happy with Trump's stunt with the bible. If they were to deploy to cities to quell unrest it wouldn't be on his lone initiative and it should nip in the bud any suggestion that Trump will stay in office if he loses in November barring any 2000 style shenanigans.

Yes, they're so unhappy with his stunt (along with all the other laws that he's broken) that they did *checks notes* literally nothing about it.

Anyone would think the Deep State was really a bit feeble.

I believe some of them may have uttered some mild words of discontent in private, with their own families.

Seriously, the thought that "Trump won't do this as it's against the law!" is massively flawed. He doesn't give two shits about the law. And why would he? Literally no-one in power holds him to any kind of account.

It's enshrined in the Constitution, and many believe the Founding Fathers did so, not just in order to protect freedoms from being taken by the government, but so that the people could protect themselves if the government were unwilling to do so.

Early Anglo settlers organised irregular units to brutally attack and destroy Indigenous groups. This led to the Second Amendment enshrining these irregular forces into law. So initially not to protect freedoms being taken by government but part of the attempt to forcibly eradicate Native Americans standing in the way of Manifest Destiny.

In Indian wars of mid to late 19th century, interestingly, the regular army stood by while local militias and settlers acting on their own used terror against Indigenous noncombatants.

The more things change, eh?

It's worth bearing in mind that this is mainly going on in American towns that we've barely heard of, and most of the country is chugging along as normal. Trump is desperately trying to build it up and stoke it because he's behind in the polls, and I doubt as many Americans are as keen on a "culture war" as he thinks. It could seriously backfire if suburban housewives with teenage sons hold him responsible.

Except in Portland they have deployed basically a secret police force made up of federal employees with no proper training dubious rights to detain citizens and no names or badge numbers to identify them. If this was a country in the gulf we would probably be involved in destabilising the government instead we are sat back watching.

Anyone know why the UN haven't sent observers in? This is usually their bag.
