Bookcase background

It’s funny that one area of Edinburgh where second hand and specialist booksellers are common is also most known for lap dancing bars. Clearly a big crossover between the bookish and the stag weekends.

There once was a cartoon in Punch of a shop where the window on the right says SEX  and SHOP.   The panels shows fairly ordinary people going in and out.  The final panel shows the place closed with the door shut revealing the full name - Wessex Bookshop.

I knew a girl who worked in one of the secondhand bookshops in the "pubic triangle".  Supposedly Dylan Moran used to browse when he was appearing at the Fringe and based Bernard Black on the owner

I've got another one as well but it's over 8mb to upload both.

I need to get them into some sort of order.

Horizontally stored books, eh?

The relevant authorities have been informed.

My bookcase was the pre social media space for virtue signalling. The Denon hi fi. Some interesting little sculptures and vases. The coolest CDs and books only. A few academic books thrown in and of course some rare or obscure football programmes. A cold, calculated way of showing off how cool/what a pretentious p***k I was.

The books and music are nearly all on my phone now. There are a couple of wee bookcases where we live now but the're little more than glorified places to rest a coffee or tea and hide various cables for devices. Stereo gathering dust under the bed. The Sonos hides behind a TV.  If I read an actual proper book and it's any good I'll try and give it to someone or stick them into charity shops.

That was more hipster signalling, surely. Was owning a Denon hi-fi indicative of the content of a person's character?

What does owning a Goodmans hi-fi say about a man? Asking for, etc.

I used to be like that. Everything was self consciously cool.

Unfortunately it was all lost on the scheme goblin single mothers that I occasionally pulled in The Vu. Nobody else ever saw it.
