I’m just spamming this thread now but it’s being reported the US have killed Ayman Al-Zawahiri, current head of Al Queda.

no-one has confirmed manner or place of death, rumours it was Afghanistan via drone strike.

Why Ayman?

I'm sure I read that Pelosi has invested heavily in American companies who are developing domestic microchip manufacturing factories.

So if she pisses the Chinese off enough that they either invade Taiwan or put in under siege she will make a fortune. She's playing chess while everyone else is playing chequers.

Her husband pretty blatantly insider trades off her political activities, and recently bought millions worth of US chip stocks just before Nancy pushed the Chips & Science Act through the house which will hand out billions to these companies.

Starting WW3 over it may be worth it for her at least.

82 years old and can't take it with her. America and the collective west looked very weak when they left Afghanistan the way they did. Russia thought they could rearrange the international order in the aftermath and instead managed to unite the West and show for all to see that their military has been a bit of a Potemkin village. Now it's China's turn to test the waters with this big fuss over not very much. So far they are looking like a paper tiger but we'll see what the morning brings. Wouldn't want to be living on Quemoy or Matsu right now.

No doubt the US would act shocked and say any retaliation was unprovoked.

Why should China have any say in who should and shouldn’t visit Taiwan?

The CCP have never had any influence there or stake to claim.

China has never officially recognised Taiwan as an independent state.  It regards it as part of China even it is not in any practical sense.

Similar to Kosovo, Kashmir, Falklands and so on.  An official visit is seen as reaffirming reality instead of their preferred view.

They view it as part of their country so it's a bit like Ukraine with Crimea or Azerbaijan with Nagorno-Karabakh but going into hysterics over Nancy Pelosi visiting Taipei when Joe Biden isn't in a position in constitutional terms to stop her from doing so and the US military have actively advised against it is a bit over the top. Suggests they don't understand how the American political system works.

Don’t really have much to say about this entire situation, other than it’s great to see Chinese government officials promoting wantons even if they have added an l & y to the end of it, that’s marketing right there!

Quite, and she's already got a freezer full of fancy ice cream so I don't think she's in it for the money, or without the backing of her fellow geriatric in the Whitehouse. It was probably the mildest bit of fist waving to China's increasing belligerency in the South China Sea and direct threats to Taiwan they could come up, but it would be really dumb to give up their policy of firm ambiguity towards Taiwan that has served all parties well until now.

Wonder if there’s a Chinese Liz Truss?

Read about the history of Taiwan. It’s never been under communist rule. Any claim is weak and solely based on geography.

China's claim is based on neither communism not geography. Taiwan is an integral part of that country, which even the Cold Warrior Americans have recognised for nearly 50 years.

It is the kind of deceitful, backpedaling whenever the West suddenly doesn't like the verbal and/or written commitments it previously made, that is doing so much to set the great conflicts of the 21st century into motion throughout Eurasia.

I’ll say again, Taiwan has NEVER been a part of the People’s Republic of China. It’s essentially the last remnants of the Republic of China. It wasn’t forcibly taken from them and is a democratic nation with its own parliament, currency, laws, military etc.

Why does China get to dictate who should and shouldn’t visit?

It has been part of China for hundreds of years though. And even the Americans ultimately recognised that the PRC is the sole representative government of China - hence its place at the UN and on the Security Council.

It's quite clearly not a nation when its own government claims to represent China rather than a self-contained Taiwanese nation. Which is one of several reasons why a claim to nationhood is not recognised by the vast majority of states both in the West and the rest of the world.

It doesn't get to dictate anything: Pelosi is there after all. It does however get to impose costs in response to flagrant breaches of Chinese territorial integrity, an integrity that the US freely agreed to decades ago.

That's how sovereign states work and the rump Taiwanese regime will have to deal with the consequences one way or the other.
