Less than six months left on your contract you can talk to and sign for anybody. You then either see out your current deal or, what seems to happen more nowadays, cut a deal to join you next club early.

When a players contract is up in the Summer for his current club, he can agree terms in the Winter with another club to join them once his current contract is up. Without the new team usually having to pay anything, unless the current team wants rid of him early, then they might get something. I think @Mr. Alli explained it better.

It’s weird because it’s not even a binding legal agreement to join the club either. If he got an offer on a better wage at a different club he could still go sign despite having signed a pre contract

A no-lose situation for a player.

When Richard Brittain backed out his deal with us, Roy MacGregor paid us compensation as the legal advice they got was it would cost a huge amount of time and money to defend themselves in court over it, and they would likely lose.

Calum Elliot done it with us and went to Raith and we got nothing (think an error on our part possibly)

Presumably it wasn't worth time/money on your part.

Yup. The terminology confuses a lot of people. It's a contract in the same way as any other contract of employment is a contract. The "pre" bit refers to the player's registration as the contract is agreed at a point before the player is able to transfer their registration. The player can breach that contract but they're left open to the usual sanctions for anyone breaching a contract.
Sarto Mutiny
It's a deal that makes sense for everyone. United were not likely to give him a new deal, and as much as I like him I don't think he's good enough for this level. It's a good signing for Dundee as he is a very good Championship player, and for the player it means a change of clubs and regular football without having to uproot himself. Good luck to him.

Deserves his new deal imo. Edited January 9, 2021 by mishtergrolsch
