The Dundee United Thread 22/23

Bold move to punt your second choice keeper and only experienced back up striker without replacing either, or strengthening any other position in the squad. It's going to get very messy indeed when Fletcher picks up an injury.

Is this correct that Souttar began his career at Celtic?

Don't think it's accurate regarding 'career'. If it's boys' clubs attached to senior sides being referred to,  he started at Brechin City.

His 'career' started at Dundee United, otherwise my career started at the Cubs.

Lazy journalism?

Cheers. They must have copied and pasted from their Andy Robertson archive.

Ah well, at least we managed to sign a right footed centre back 😅

He might be shite but on the other hand, he might do ok. If he's got the physicality required then that's at least a start. We've seen enough young players from English teams come up here on loan and not succeed to know that it's likely the boy isn't going to be a huge success, but then again he could be a diamond like Curtis Good.

I wanted a centre back, a central midfielder and a striker. So far we've only got the centre back. Whether we get the striker in on a free quickly is the next question. Leave it a while and you end up signing shite like Max Biamou or a player who takes months to get fit like Eddie Ofere. It's really not ideal.

I'm happy enough Watt is gone. Even that interview on Sky at St. Mirren made him sound like a nightmare to manage. That being said, ideally it would have been outwith the league, but then player power is king and if the choice was a player the manager obviously doesn't want, who is likely our highest paid player, sitting on the bench and causing disruption, or getting him out to a club he's willing to go to, it's probably the right call.

Personally, I think the mistake we've made - if we weren't absolutely confident of signing another forward - was loaning out Logan Chalmers again. If you assume Fletcher will start games up front supported by Middleton and Harkes/McGrath, having Chalmers on the bench would have been a good option.

So, my positives from the window are...

1 - We've kept Behic

2 - We've recalled Kai Fotheringham, who has done a great job at Stirling and would benefit from exposure in the first team

3 - We've given plenty of young players an opportunity to play first team football in the SPFL

4 - We've signed a right footed centre back, though the jury is still out

Agree with all of that.

Were obviously short up top. I think were an improving side though. Fox has done pretty well I think, got us in a much better shape and are definitely showing more going forward than we did under Courts and Mellon. From our start of the season where we were a shambles, miles adrift and had 2 points from 8 games we've picked up 18 from 14 and were unlucky not to win against a good Hearts side and were robbed at Hibs. We also don't have Celtic to play again where all those around us do whilst clutching is a definite plus. .

I thought we needed a striker and right sided centre back. We probably still do but hopefully this young guy is up to doing a job. Time will tell.

Celtic wouldnt be due any of the fee through the "development" type thingy.

Assuming thats right I didnt realise that clubs that take players on loan (Fleetwood) are due part of the developement fee. If so Ross County would be due something as well Id have thought.

Enough is enough. I am not one for moaning but how can we possibly be this incompetent!! We let go of Watt and Clark and are now left with Fletcher, 16 year old and an unproven anaku (who btw has been punted from the squad recently cause he’s shit) We are in a relegation fight FFS! Motherwell signed 3  last night…….TA your time is up. Let’s not forget we actually had Europe this season, look at the state of the squad!!! Failure after fucking failure. Scouted imari for around 2 year and he’s hopeless, Neilson f**k up, Finland keeper, harkes 1 year deal….it’s in black and white! The list of failures is endless. We as fans deserve so much better.

I’m worried I’m becoming a ‘Happy Clapper’ 😊

The picture of our transfer window activity from the BBC page is doing the rounds this morning – and by large getting torn to shreds. We’ve not strengthened admittedly, but I’d suggest there’s a very good reason for that (£££££). However are we really any worse off than before?

Watt – second choice striker. Disruptive influence in the dressing room it would seem. Costs us a fortune in wages too

Eriksson – back up keeper who looked shaky the few times he did play. If Birigihitti gets injured, I think we’d be able to get an emergency loan keeper

Chalmers – was already out on loan

Glass – was already out on loan

Meekison – wasn’t getting any meaningful gametime, although I’m puzzled as to why

Bisland – never played a minute

Duffy – was already out on loan

Robson – never played a minute

Watson – just back from long term injury.

Hutchinson – never played a minute

Adams – never played a minute

The first choice XI isn't any weaker but we're dreadfully short of options up front. Even a fully fit Fletcher is only going to manage about 70 minutes and there's nothing similar to replace him with off the bench. If he gets injured then we're really going to struggle. Does seem odd that they didn't have someone lined up to replace Watt. Or maybe they did and it fell through, or they're a free agent. It doesn't look good though.

Kinda funny how the same folk that were arguing that we should spend a fortune in bringing Watt in early 12 months ago are now delighted to get rid, leaving us with the thinnest forward depth we've had, ever?

I mean, we've been playing with two up top of late - Fletcher and Middleton. After that we have a 16yo and a guy kept out of the squad by a 16yo. Gonna be painful staring at the bench when we've got a couple of injuries and when we're a goal down to [insert relegation rival] in a few weeks. Stick Edwards up top, I guess!

The crazy thing is - looking at Watt's stats - he'd scored 3 goals and an assist in his previous 5 games before that wild sending off v Motherwell (positively overflowing with goals by his standards), then he's left on the bench for five games with barely an appearance. Then, gets a start v St Johnstone cos our ageing striker is injured, plays well and scores the winning goal and that's basically it - gone!

Y'all crazy!
