The Dundee United Thread 22/23

Define ‘big’. We are well below Hearts, Hibs, Rangers, Celtic and Aberdeen but in terms of infrastructure and fan base we would rightly argue to be high up in that second chunk of teams.

Our recent footballing history is, of course, shit and puts us back a few notches.

You'd think your manager jumping ship, citing how big a club Hearts are would raise alarm bells for the United fans.

Alarm bells? lol

Neilson cited how big a club we were too. It's what managers do.

Hearts probably have a fanbase double the size of ours, which is unsurprising given they're based in a city with a population over double in size.

That fanbase hasn't really done them all that much use over the years mind.

United's fanbase is about 6th biggest in Scotland. Motherwell fans might disagree. Dundee fans might too - bless them!

But save for some Arab sheikh riding in to our rescue, we're never gonna win the league again, we'll never reach the latter stages of European competition again. We just have to hope for competing as well as we can, hope to triumph in the occasional cup and attempt to gain the bragging rights over our rivals.

But guess what, thats exactly the best future Aberdeen fans can hope for too. And Hearts, Hibs, Motherwell fans etc etc

It was just a shite fishing attempt, I didn't need a monologue about Dundee United's place in Scottish football.

Mochrie, Neilson and Graham are all youth players, not sure why they are on this list?

Also, not wanting to admonish Neilson completely but a large part of our model is down to the Sporting Director identifying players rather than just the manager.

The timing and the current circus following Scottish football make the departure a bit rubbish/a shock, but Neilson leaving isn’t in itself a big issue. I’d be more frustrated (as is now being reported) that we lose McCulloch and Forrest. Felt like we had a bit of stability within the coaching setup and they were more Asghar appointments rather than Neilson’s (certainly Forrest was).

Finding a whole new coaching team isn’t ideal given the club banging on about this whole ‘project’ but I suppose if it is to happen then the start of the summer isn’t the worst time to have to do it.

Thankfully Hearts didn't wait until their season was starting in November, or whenever it is, to swoop in for Neilson.

You are, of course, correct - the list must include youth players that were given their debut by Neilson.  I copied and pasted it from the fine Robbie Neilson page on Arab Archive .

A bizarre and unexpected turn of events.

Not clear on Nielsen's thinking here at all. I suppose from a Hearts point of view it gets the manager issue settled quickly, and for the first time in ages the owner has acted for the football side of the club.  Is this an indication that hearts are beginning to accept their fate?

For Utd, instability at the start of pre-season, but at least there's plenty of time to get a replacement in. Levein and Wright would both be solid choices that would see Utd comfortably stay up (as long as the court case doesn't go against them obviously).

Someone completely different, e.g. an American, would bring a bit of fresh interest to the league, and would have the added benefit of potentially going spectacularly wrong.

Ann Budge though, fucking hell she really doesn't have a great deal of self-awareness does she?!

Gonna have to leave Arabs Anonymous on FB for a bit. Normal stay in there for entertainment but there along with twitter is pretty tragic atm.

Absolute fannies shitting themselves that "Robbie must know something about the upcoming court case!!!!".

Anyone with half a brain could see how little substance the court case actually has and that it's highly unlikely United won't be playing Premiership football when the season starts.

The hearts fans should be taking an absolute reddy with their patter too, they seem to think the whole of the United support are consumed by grief that they've taken Robbie 🤣🤣🤣

Don't blame him, joining the biggest club in the league m9. (Assuming we're not expelled)

The biggest club in the championship. Right enough that’s his level.
