West Development U20 League / Teams

Recommended Posts

Larkhall Thistle u21s have moved up to the Premier League as some of last season's Premier u21s have moved to u20s. To be fair, they were well placed and could very well have been promoted anyway had all the games been played.

Even if most of their remaining games were away from home and they still had their rivals to play? 😉

Club Statement: U20 Development League

Blantyre Victoria F.C. are delighted to announce that our application to the West of Scotland Football League U20 Development League has been accepted ahead of the forthcoming 2020/21 season. All matches will be played on Friday evenings.

We will be joining forces with David Flannagan and David Kyle head coaches of Holytown Colts U17's who have been loyal supporters of Blantyre Vics for many years. Joining them on the coaching staff of the Blantyre Victoria U20 squad will be former Clydebank and Shotts Bon Accord defender Gerry McGurn.

U20 Coach David Flannagan this afternoon said: “We are really looking forward to this new venture. With this development squad we will be able to develop and improve the skills of players, who are looking to reach a higher standard in the game. Looking long-term we hope to see many of our players step up to senior whether with Blantyre Vics or to go onto have a successful career elsewhere.”

Club manager John Gibson said: "It’s excellent news for Blantyre Vics to have our own development team, they will be joining a very good and hard league which gives our players a good chance of developing into better players. We are excited about the prospect of bringing these boys through with the incentive to become first team players, this pathway is important not only to us but to other clubs as well. This is why having this development league was a great idea, the club as a whole will now start the recruitment process for attracting players.”

The club are beginning to look for high quality players born in years 2001-2003. We look forward to announcing the first of our U20 development squad signings very soon.

Have to admit Pyramidic, The Blantyre Vics, same a Forth yestersay is another one that is pulled out of the bag and not heard a peep that they would be starting a team, well done them
Application Deadline Day is close by, 15th June.

To be honest when I first listed the teams I was thinking if they get to maybe 5 or 6 teams from the West with the current 5 west teams then maybe they could make up a regional West and then an East regionalised and that would be great but in all honestly to get 26 teams officially state they are applying to join the Lowland U20 League with their U20 team is absolutely fantastic and maybe more to follow in next 4 days just makes me think that the Lowland league will just grow from strength to strength

LATEST UPDATE 8/0620

Have confirmed Officially that they have or are applying or operated an Under 20s team in season 19/20.
Nothing is guaranteed until after June the 15th deadline for applications.
The only real problem teams  will have is having the right criteria for their home parks

Dunipace have an U20s confirmed but admittedly unsure at the moment for WOS or EOS

POSSIBLY; Teams who have applied are listed above. So at this moment we have 31 teams from the West side and with an impressive, excellent East side of over 30 teams, the Lowland U20s Development League looks as if is growing from strength to strength)

The list below is of teams who have expressed an interest but nothing has been made official

Pollok                                                (heard they have their U20 management in place and just one obstacle to get over and they will apply)
Largs Thistle                                  (informed unofficially that they will be applying to join the U20 league)

Cumbernauld, Auchinleck, Rutherglen Glencairn and Cumnock are looking into it but think it looks like 21/22 when they are ready

Brilliant how many clubs have joined the U20 set up, I expected maybe around 16 at most. However, biggest thank you goes to the many youth teams who have decided to link up with now senior clubs-well done to everyone involved.

All the teams listed above in the thread and I was told at the Zoom meeting there was Pollok, Ardrossan Wnton and Drumchapel United were represented, which means they have applied to join the :Lowland Development League.  Think that's about 34 teams from the West with 3 days till deadline date

WoSFL Chairman Explains New Development League System

Written by  Owen McCarrey

The new Development League will "give younger players a pathway for progression” according to West of Scotland League (WoSFL) chairman Dave Mckenna.

Speaking exclusively to YFS, he said the new format is planned to give younger players opportunities within the current game.

Dave, who is also club secretary at East Kilbride, shared his insight on youth players: "There is a big gap from between when the kids come through at ages 16 and 17 and a lot of the teams start to struggle to attract and retain players because people at that age start to think, where is this going to go?”

“Unless the players get picked up which a number of them do and end up playing in the ‘Club Academy Scotland Pro Youth’ set up, which can lead to getting contracts to play in the senior leagues but there isn’t always huge numbers.”

“What this development league is planning to do is give players at that age a pathway that will initially be within their own club’s development ranks, playing on a Friday night to then eventually making their way to the first team to play on a Saturday”.

Once approval is given to the WoSFL from the government for training to resume following the Covid-19 pandemic, the plan is for the new Development League to start.

As a younger player starts to grow older they will become even more eager to be scouted by a better team, however if this move unfortunately doesn’t happen for them as they reach ages 16 or 17 they may begin to doubt themselves and wonder if they have a future in football.

Currently the Scottish Lowland Football League (SLFL) runs a development league whose format allows teams from the Lowland League and the East of Scotland Football League (EoSFL) to play each other and give younger players much needed experience for progressing their game.

When asked about the Development League’s structure, Dave said: “The plan is to have an East and West part to the development league and at the minute, it’s shaping up to be two conferences in the East and there would be two or three conferences in the West depending on the amount of teams.

“All of that would be situated under the Lowland Development League and run under the direction of the SLFL Board”.

Dave also confirmed exclusively to YFS that, as it stands, around 35 West Region teams have applied for their newly established development league.

“The Development League idea was very well accepted by clubs because it’s going to be a step-up to either the Lowland League, the South of Scotland League, the EoSFL, the WoSFL,  or to more senior clubs because it’s a higher level of football, not only off the park but on the park as well,” Dave added.

One problem that faces the Development League however is travelling to and from different parts of the country on a Friday night for players and staff.

“For geographical reasons more than anything, these games will be played on a Friday night and travelling on a Friday night can be difficult for people leaving work or college etc, so what we will be doing is splitting into two geographical grouping of clubs from the East and clubs from the West,” Dave confirmed.

“But we are also planning to have an all in-cup so that teams from all divisions or conferences will get the chance to play each other, that’s our plan.”

34 from the west but Upper Annandale were there too last season so maybe 35 ?

Last season, at the end, there were 15 from the EoS plus East Fife and Edinburgh City plus 6 eastern clubs from the Lowland League. 15 plus 2 plus 6 so a total of 23. Plus 9 newcomers this time (maybe) from the EoS to make it possibly 32.

Could be 35 from west and 32 from east: total could be 65. [correction! should total 67 which would make it the same size as the WoS)

Lots of guess work and we won't have to wait long now, thankfully, for the official announcements.

…… so far the possible entries in the WoS have been Premier Division (11 out of 20).

Conference 'A':   6 out of 16.

Conference 'B':   5 out of 16.

and Conference 'C':   7 out of 15.

That's a surprisingly good spread of interest for the first season. 28 were new Senior clubs.

Upper Annandle will be in the East and looks like Dunipace will do the same, although the West might be regionalised so Dunipace might reconsider as they would go intot he section were they don't travel to Ayrshire, so not long journeys
