Is this the opportunity to change to summer football?

Specifically speaking, we play far too many games in December. A month of which is probably the most expensive for anyone in a calendar year.

Crowds usually hold up well in December. Often they're better.

Think 2 of the main issues were what happens when one /some of the last round of games gets postponed . You could end up in the position we are at the moment when one season is not finished when the next one is due to start.

You could not do the necessary repair on your pitch during the close season winter months.

We do, and a great way to stop there being about 7/8 games in December would be to scrap the January break so the OF can go their jollies to Dubai or Florida or wherever.

For me there are better things to do in the summer than football, far prefer it in the winter months.

I think it sounds good in theory but doesn’t stand up in practice.

It’s never been put in to practice

The League Cup group stages are all in the summer.

Granted not much can be drawn from that as attendances will usually be down for most of those games regardless of when they're played.

Aye , ok.  But I was assuming that flyingscot was really meaning the , as yet untried concept of the close season being some period during winter , rather than some period during late spring/early summer.

It could be argued we have summer football. We already start in July and finish in May. It's a short break. There's scope now to extend and play games later May if necessary. How would that work with summer football if you had a backlog...play in to December?

I'd imagine the league is suspended for 6 weeks.
This is what the Scandinavian leagues do and what all leagues in Europe will need to do for the 2022 World Cup.

So just to confirm, your "summer" league is likely to involve games in January and December in a World Cup or Euros year?

This is what gets me every time some misty eyed pundit clamours for “summer football” as if all games throughout a season are played in weather where you need sunglasses, shorts and a t shirt to go to  games. The football season at the moment lasts from July to May. If you were to play throughout the summer months non stop, then the season would last from February to December. No horrible, freezing, snowy days in October, November, February and March.

The only leagues that play a summer season are lesser footballing nations than ourselves.... in terms of league footy anyway. So a massive no

Wait, you mean there are lesser footballing nations than ourselves.

At the moment, we play the bulk of our fixtures through the winter. If we could play the bulk of our fixtures through the spring/summer/autumn months then surely it's a no brainer. Better crowds, grass pitches and probably less games postponed due to adverse weather. Like someone else, potentially a better TV deal with no competitors playing through this period.

We play the bulk of our fixtures, League Cup, European qualifiers, league matches, Scottish Cup matches, during July, August, September, October, April and May.

It's a shite idea.

Next season we'd be having a bigger break halfway through the season than between seasons 😂 how could you even call that Summer football?

It would be the same every two years, so what's the actual benefit?

I'd also worry about the fact a lot of clubs would presumably be signing players from England. So in the Summer youd be signing players who've completed a full season, and expecting them to go straight into another half season instantly, and then getting a minor break before the next season and it would be a broken up season due to International tournaments.

For example, English player plays from Summer 2022 to May 2023, moves to Scotland and plays until December 2023, short break then back into it January 2024 due to WC. Youd be expecting players to play almost 24 months football without a proper break.

How many games do they play?

18 plus a few cups and the season starts in March and ends in September. In front of crowds in double figures for most games.

The opening weekend was wiped out for weather this year and the camanachd cup final was abandoned in a monsoon at the end of last season.
