The SPFL recommendation?

Recommended Posts

I'm not going to argue the right or wrongs about the situation but what happens to the players of clubs are still furloughing them after June 9th? I'm presuming if they moved to a new club the club would have to pay 100% of that players wage?
Hadn't seen an answer to this but apologies if there has been

If players are released and join another club then under the rules they wouldn't be eligible as it's only for those employed in their role as at 28th February. It's a horrible rule which has caught out thousands who moved job just before this happened. If we reach that point and we are no closer to knowing when football will recommece next season I cannot see any teams signing new players. Unless clubs are to keep players on rolling contacts there are going to be a lot of players suddenly in a very difficult financial situation.

Think Gordon Smith has a good idea in going 14-14-14 for a season 2 up from Championship 6 up from league 1 and the rest in bottom league

So it’s ok to drop Clyde, Peterhead and Forfar into the bottom league and deny cove promotion?

Get that idea right in the sea.

I would take that, assume there would be a split to make it a 36 game season -  and I would make it a permanent structure.

If England can start training from mid july for 4 weeks before starting all leagues again then why can't we when surely every uk country will be out lockdown at the same time

Can't be 1 rule for England and another for Scotland

Eh, wee Burney seems to want to keep us under house arrest much longer.

Did Gordon Smith mention how he would accommodate the winner of the HL and LL?

I might be looking at the wrong thing but aren't they talking about doing that as a tv (I.e. closed doors) type event?

And what do all the clubs do with the players that are out of contract in June? Tell them they are not allowed to leave and have to finish the season? Or do we finish the season with every team having different squads? Where's the fairness in that if the likes of Partick Thistle, Hearts spend their way out of relegation trouble or Falkirk spend their way to the L1 title?
Add in the fact that as soon as football is able to get played in Auguest then Sky Sports will want the new league season started in Scotland so any talk of playing out the season in August/September is never going to happen.
Teams will not be allowed to sign up a bunch of players to improve their results before the end of the season. FIFA have said (and clarified a bit more today) that they will refuse to register any players until the season is finished. Other than current free agents I presume.
So if a players contract runs out he wont be able to sign for another club. At that point with no wage he may well decide he has no choice but to continue playing for the team until the season is finished.
Loaned players whose loan ends on 30th June will not be allowed to play beyond that point for either the loan or parent club until the season finishes either.
Having said all that, it is clearly far simpler to just end the season just now through whatever method the SPFL come up with. Ending this season feels like the easy part considering the mess which next season will likely be.

Why is that a good idea anyway?

It doesn’t remove the need to play teams 4 times a season as a split would be needed so why bother changing the current system. I’m all for changing to something better but what benefit does 14-14-14 actually bring?

Null and void, no promotion or relegation, and play next season with the same teams in each league as started this season then?

Only if they also get the managers back too! It would be a lively Falkirk thread at that point.

Never said we were but the odds on Airdrie, Montrose or East Fife overhauling both Raith and Falkirk to be in the automatic promotion spot (1st) would be pretty long. Falkirk are the only team with a realistic gripe that they could have won the league out of all 4 divisions and as I said you have to draw the line somewhere. Airdrie are closer to 5th than 1st.

You’re just highlighting how close a League it is with very little between the teams, which suggests points would be dropped by all.
Airdrie and Falkirk beat Raith, you could be third. Hardly inconceivable (alright, maybe Airdrie bearing Raith is a stretch based on recent records).

The game in England are behind closed door is what they are proposing providing the science approves it in relation to covid

Gordon Smiths plan is to shoehorn the colt teams into the league it was leaked last week under the idea it will boost the crowds and give players of lesser clubs an incentive to get themselves a move to a bigger club playing Celtic or Rangers colts (better exposure to coaches and scouts)

Can't see Cove being happy with that.

and what two days he propose promoting from the championship?

You’ll be months before you get to see your team again. Best just starting to adjust to that reality now.

And continuing on current form, we all spill points in strange places and end up about where we currently are.

I have an “idea”...declare the season complete, and call the top teams the winners/champions due to an Act of God (makes Rangers happy, Celtic now have an asterisk...makes Celtic happy, as they’ll ignore the asterisk). All Premiership teams get £1.5 million in total prize money (equals the average payout for finishing either 6th or 7th...makes Rangers happy because it cost Celtic £1.85 million, makes Celtic happy because it cost Rangers £900k that they can’t easily afford, unlike Celtic).

That gives us a £2.52 million pound slush fund. No promotions, no relegations. Payments of £65,000 each to all 30 lower league teams (£1.95 million), plus £10,000 to HL top 5 and LL top 2 teams (they are the real competitors for promotion playoffs...now spent £2.02 million). We now compensate the teams in promotion competition, dividing the remaining £500,000...£250,000 to the Championship teams 1-5th (£100,000/£70,000/£40,000/£25,000/£15,000)...$150,000 to League One (£60,000/£40,000/£25,000/£15,000/£10,000)...£100,000 to League Two (£45,000/£25,000/£15,000/£10,000/£5,000).

You want a fairer allocation of funds, that would do it...never happen, but something has to break the Celtic/Rangers monopoly...and this might be the best chance in a long time to make substantive change. So I hope the lower teams will finally rise up.
