The old SFL were so utterly incompetent at generating any sort of income that the SPL really had to bring everyone under one umbrella and let the professionals take charge. Now everyone in the lower leagues is better off, and as you say there's less of a financial gulf between the leagues and more opportunity for promotion.

The lower league clubs should perhaps take heed when it comes to their own intransigence with the league below. That safety net and increased chance of getting back up makes a big difference.

Is that the SPL which turned down a Sky TV deal on par with the one England were offered ? ..............Because the OF weren't happy with the spread of wealth down their league and possibly the leagues below ?    Yes the professionals did a great job.

 How times change .

You've made literally all of that nonsense up in your own head.

I take it you were also taken in by the "Preferred Option" ?  .............SPL TV which  didn't even get off the ground .

Turning your nose up at a £12M  a year TV deal to eventually go squirming back to accept a fraction from Setanta is really good business.  I'm glad we have professionals running Scottish football .

The Greed is Good league did us all proud.

Wtf are you talking about? Setanta offered more than Sky. Also Celtic Rangers and Aberdeen wanted to go with Sky as they were more a more secure option which they ended up in being proven right. Other clubs just saw more cash with Setanta.

In 2002 Roger Mitchell rejected the Sky deal  in favour of an SPL TV  channel . That never got off the ground .  BBC then stepped in temporarily so that at least there was coverage until a deal could be worked out . Setanta then came in with a deal in 2004 which was reportedly  far less than the original Sky deal..................... but better than the new deal Sky were prepared to offer after being snubbed first time round.

I remember reports at the time of Celtic , Rangers and initially Aberdeen being at the forefront of all negotiations  leading to threats of resignations from the rest of the SPL teams over the way negotiations were going , particularly the Setanta one .

Meanwhile The English FA negotiated an inflated  deal with Sky around that time and as they say , the rest is history

This article here explains that the speculated amount at the time sky offered was well off. As viewing figures games not involving Celtic or Rangers fell off a cliff.

Whilst Mitchell made a c**t of it Im guessing the amount turned down was nowhere near the amount speculated, probably journalists seeing the english premiership rights going up and up and assuming the Scottish one would go up the same fold but viewing figures were lower than sky expected.

A good article which as you say , the events were dictated by the box office duo who held all the strings and were pulling Roger Mitchell all ways to ensure they got their "entitled " share.

Reading through the whole article it appears this has been the case in every deal that has been struck.  Understandable in some ways as no one can deny the the pulling power of the top 2 in a love them , hate them sort of way ...........but really not doing anything to enhance the rest of the league and Scottish football in general.

You compare that with England and the monetary  figures stated even in their lower leagues and wonder why we are so shite at marketing our product.  I realise that  the population differences obviously reflect on viewing figures but the standard of football on show down the leagues  is not any better than the top league up here.

Frustrating that this is the current situation and there is no indication of it ever changing.  No one seems to learn from mistakes made in the past.

At no point in the entire SPL era were Scottish clubs offered a deal which was even close to matching what England had, so you are absolutely talking out of your arse on this. Worth noting that the new deal the SPFL are about to start is worth well over double that supposedly astonishing £12m a year figure you mentioned above.

The monetary value was most likely  relative to the viewing figures.

If you read that report the SPL were half way through a 4 year £46M deal ( almost £12m a year) in 2000  when Sky were in negotiations   to increase their offer.  No one was sure of the exact figures on the table but it was reportedly a lot more than the £12m they were paying . ................................Also that was in 2000 . For the current deal to have only doubled in 20 years isn't much in the way of progress in the grand scheme of things .

To save their own skins, aye we know that as well.  Auto relegation from League 2 should be set in stone if Kelty and Brora dont get up this year.

Are you advocating all teams through the leagues that were in play off positions be promoted as well then?

Why ?

both had a chance of getting up this year, that’s all.

what about if Kelty and Brora get up this year. That’s about 5 years worth based on past pay offs so 5 year trapdoor shut to allow leagues and teams to Stabilise. That seems fair ?

Those 4 teams aren't in the bottom tier currently but will be under this restructure.
Or you could state that those clubs are two promotions from the premeirship. They still will be under a three 14 team league set up. They are just moaning because of the shit crowds they will get.

They needn't worry. If the Government doesn't scrap their social distancing instruction, very little will change. There won't be any more football. Society cannot function long term with social distancing.

We'll get our 600 or so into our ground with social distancing no problem!

We'll, until we're thrown out.....

If the government does scrap their social distancing instruction, an awful lot will change. The health service will be swamped and many more people will die. You don't re-enter the building because the fire has been brought under control.

Nobody is enjoying it, but if we have to sit on our arses a wee while longer to save lives, then that's what we've got to do.

A new proposal of 14,14,16- 3 division reconstruction on the table. Wishful thinking we can have 44 clubs still able to field a team if this lockdown goes on much longer.

Why would that be attractive to lower league teams. ? Block it Div 2

We want 14-14-14, why would we take in 2 new clubs. 16 teams and Elgin, Peterhead, Cove and Brora in the same league. Who in their right mind would take that!

Exactly - GTF with that idea.

Give it five years and you'll be playing Caledonian Braves and St Cadocs. You'll probably want an expanded SPFL then.
