Coronavirus and the Scottish Championship

Recommended Posts

For next season only, have two divisions in Scotland - current Premiership & Championship as Top League, and current League1 & League 2 as Lower League. Scrap the League Cup and start the season with a playoff between current bottom of Championship & Top of League 1 for right to play in top league next season. The two leagues play out as normal, with top 12 and bottom 10 in the top league making up the top two leagues for the season after, and top 10, bottom 10 in the second lower league making up the two lower leagues for the season after.  If the Highland League & Lowland League champions want in on the action, then they and the bottom of League 2 take part in a mini tournament at the same time as the playoff mentioned above.

It doesn't help the second/third in League 1 at the moment, and doesn't really help with the issue of Champions, but it is a fairer compromise and would make for a really interesting season in 2020/21.

Thoughts?????

I have no doubt that the decision to end the season where it is will be the one taken.

But from my post isn’t it obvious that I don’t accept the principle that the top team at the moment should be promoted ?

My idea of the fairest way is to complete the season, no matter how long it takes. Next season can be adjusted to suit.

For me the next fairest would probably be to void the season - but I am not sure what that means with prize money

Does your definition of "no matter how long" include going beyond the end of June, allowing teams  to bin  out of contract dung and chuck cash at new signing?

Currently not every team has played the same number of games. They haven’t played the same number of home and away and they have played all the teams the same number of time. That’s why using current standings isn’t fairer.

You can always adjust each team backwards removing any points gained until you reach the point where all teams have played the same. Simples.

Two issues.

How do you keep clubs solvent?

How do you complete the season?

Most of the solutions are downright selfish (Ann Budge's, for example) to those that don't take account of the first question.

First priority is keeping clubs from administration - that needs hard cash from the governing bodies.

If that is in place then the best thing might be to curtail next season to allow the current season to be completed in July/August instead of the League Cup. That would mean a shorter League Cup format - no group games, for example, or no League Cup at all to allow a full league season on 2020-21.

There's absolutely no reason why our players can't continue the season by working from home. They'd be as effective doing this as they are when they show up at stadiums. The useless b*****ds.

Yes

That ain't going to happen. The rules refer to a season and are explicit as to when it starts. They akso define when the season ends but give a number of options including "when the Board decide." As long as that decision can be seen to be fair and reasonable it will not be capable of being overturned by the Courts even if there are other reasonable options.

It is hardly fair and reasonable to allow the competition to complete with players who would not ordinarily have been in any squad.

You are doon.

League reconstruction is the only way through this.

If football is suspended beyond August/September we face a much narrower window to try and fit a full 36/38 game season. More if we have playoffs and cups.

If European competitions remain in place they will eat up a lot of midweeks if teams from Scotland progress.

International weekends will also eat into the time available and with Euro 2021, domestic football will have to end at an earlier date than normal.

If we somehow get the league started in August then we could have the same setup as we do now. But if start heading to September/October then a shorter season will be required which a new setup will be needed.

I have already said that we probably will be relegated irrespective of the decision by the SPFL. However, I see that the EFL have decided to complete the season and plenty of pundits think the English premiership should be completed too.

You can very easily have a shorter season without any reconstruction by just playing each other 2/3 times.

It is possible that until an approved vaccine is available and effective that the ban on large gatherings will continue for some time.

They said a vaccine may be 18 months away. Large gatherings can’t be put off for that long surely 😞 I’d predict 80% minimum of Scottish clubs would fold

Hearts have announced a 50% wages cut across the board. Surely many more to flollow.

As for large gatherings I'm not sure how that will unfold, but today China have announced that citizens are being allowed back on the street, that's just over three months since the virus started in Wuhan.

Thing is with a vaccine that long away would you risk mingling in large crowds if they lifted the ban in say three months.?
