UEFA TV Blackouts

I think the idea that the two games this week would have been on TV had it not been for the "blackout" is a little naive.

In past deals, only Sky showed live replays. That means it would almost certainly have been left to Premier...and so far they only game they've shown that didn't involve either Celtic or Sevco was the Hearts v Inverness semi-final last season - which was a contractual obligation rather than a burning desire.

I can pretty much guarantee that had Celtic and/or Sevco needed a replay in the 4th round (when they were played on non-UEFA dates), they would have been shown on Premier.

Indeed, last season Premier wanted to show Sevco v Aberdeen but had to settle for full delayed coverage after 10pm.

Think that would be because they had access to the live game to edit the highlights immediately. Not the case in these midweek games which is why they will probably turn up at some point today. Don't even think the game was on Kilmarnock TV?

The BBC are more than entitled to send their own OBs as they do for the Premiership highlights, and the non-live featured game(s) in the Scottish Cup. For whatever reason, they're choosing not to do so for replays.

Again, this all relies on an assumption that the deal would be exactly the same and structured in exactly the same way if the blackout didn't exist. The blackout will reduce the value of the TV deal to broadcasters, and could fairly easily have been one of the reasons why Sky Sports decided not to continue their deal (or didn't offer as much as Premier).

The UEFA blackout is a game changer in terms of how the competition could be sold to broadcasters, and it is pure speculation to pretend to know exactly how broadcasters (and the SFA) would have acted if it wasn't in place.

You're (still) missing the point.

Premier can show a replay if they want, and are allowed to. They could have shown Hibs v Dundee Utd in the previous round but didn't. Thus, even if the blackout weren't a thing, it's a fairly logical assumption that they wouldn't have shown either of this week's replays.

Interesting to see that La Liga TV (Owned and operated by Premier Sports) have the Barcelona game on at 3pm today... I know they'd spoken about trying to ignore or change the ban but they tried that with their Serie A coverage and they were made to come to any love coverage after 5.15. Not sure if this game is being locked out and is only for Irish customers or if it will be shown in the UK after all.
