Airdrie0-0nians v Clyde

Recommended Posts

Sounds like Ross Lyon back to last years form, was surprised to see him back in today after being out. Lang was a big miss but Howie and rumsby had a good partnership going before he came back.
If we stay up, and that’s a big if, we need to move a few on. Simply not up to this level.

Take your pick with that

With the exception of Goodwillie, from what I've seen (admittedly a small sample size) player for player, and tactically, Clyde look the worst side in the division. If you switched Goodwillie with one of Stranrear's strikers I think their positions in the league would be switched - they have had so many draws that with a decent finisher they would be well up the league. Goodwillie has scored 60% of their goals, and has presumably set up a few as well. Think I'm right that they have only won twice in the league when he hasn't scored - weirdly both wins over Falkirk. Clyde are mainly League 2 players with a Championship striker, therefore if you stop Goodwillie it's a relatively simple game. At Broadwood we didn't do that (although should still have taken something), yesterday we did.

The one thing I would say is that when you have one obviously better player you tend to set the team up entirely around that one player, which may account for some of the team's deficiencies. Stranrear are gone though, they wont be able to win enough to catch up, so Clyde are safe from that. I think they'll probably just avoid 9th but will be pretty close - injury or suspension to Goodwillie and they will be in bother.

Goodwillie may not have scored in the 2 Falkirk games but he ran their defence absolute ragged both times. Barely got a sniff yesterday though.

I must admit when I saw the team selection yesterday I feared the worst. I couldn’t figure out how Murray was going to fit those players into any kind of formation, but i was certainly proven wrong.

The narrow midfield four allowed the full backs to get forward while providing plenty cover, which isn’t always the case when we play with a front three/ midfield three.

I still don’t think we were fantastic but a big improvement on previous weeks, particularly in the final third.

Calum Gallagher will feel hard done by finding himself out of the staring 11, however we’re starting to see the quality that Andy Ryan has. His overall play is just different class - and I’m glad he’s finally got his first goal. Hopefully he’s able to kick on and get into double figures before the end of the season.

Clyde were exactly what they’ve been each time I’ve seen them this season - a one man team.

A really important few games coming up now, we really need to pick up or we could find ourselves outwith the play offs.

From an outsider's perspective it seems like Clyde fans and Danny Lennon over-estimated their squad's ability and/or under-estimated the quality in League 1. Mitchell is a fine goalie for this level, presumably John Rankin is still a good player (?) and Goodwillie is obviously an exceptional talent at this level. Other than that though the rest of the squad is pretty dire for this level. Ray Grant can pass a ball but how often does he really influence a game? I wouldn't let any of that defence play for Airdrie's reserves let alone the first team (though admittedly I haven't seen Tom Lang play). Not signing an actual left-back for half the season is fucking criminal. And guys like Darren Smith, Ally Love, Chris Johnston and Tony Wallace have always been League 2 plodders. I reckon Clyde/Goodwillie will do enough to stay up but they/Lennon really need to get their act together for next season. Lose Goodwillie for any length of time for the rest of this season or next season, or indeed were he to leave entirely, they're fucked.

We've not been able to play the starting XI and formation that we used throughout most of last season due to a lengthy injury list. However, no denying that players like Grant who I thought would be more than capable at this level have been poor.

Mitchell, Lang and Goodwillie are the only 3 decent players we have. Majority of the new signings haven't worked out, Howie is the only other one to get pass marks.

Doesn't help that some of Lennon's line ups and formations have been baffling to say the least.
