Alternate history of Scottish football

Recommended Posts

If certain events/happenings in Scottish football down the years had panned out differently the landscape of Scottish football could've been different. What things do you wonder about & what theories do you have? Few I've wondered about include:

Would Third Lanark still be around today if Hiddleston hadn't got involved with the club?

How would certain stadiums look if the 10000 rule had never been brought in?

If the intermediate dispute was never resolved what shape would non-league have taken?

If Queens Park had went professional when everyone else did how would they have faired & where would they be today?

If Rangers had gotten their way & the five had been expelled from the SFL what would've become of those clubs?

What's this? What did I miss?
Back in 64 the oldco tried to force league re-construction from 37 to 32 teams that would've seen the 5 clubs with lowest gate receipts Berwick Rangers, Albion Rovers, Stenhousmuir, Brechin & Stranraer kicked out of the SFL. The 5 backed by Celtic chairmen Robert Kelly took it it to the Court Of Session & the proposal was dropped. In sweet sweet Karma Berwick put Rangers out of the 66-67 Scottish Cup at Shielfield thanks to a Sammy Reid goal.

Clyde were leading Inverness Caley Thistle in the penultimate round of games in the First Division in 2003-04. Had they held on they'd have won the league and been promoted (stadium issues notwithstanding). But Caley Thistle pulled it back to win 2-1. Would Caley Thistle have gone on to have an established run in the top flight? Would Clyde have become, if not an established top flight side then at least a Livingston or a Hamilton Accies? Or would Clyde's financial troubles been blown open in the Premier League and they'd have done a Gretna?

We're talking 60 years ago...

Ah, I didn't know about that. I thought I had missed some tear-stained statement from the banter years calling for five clubs to be kicked out of the league.

That wouldn't have surprised me in the slightest.

Cheers!

If Tom Rogic had scored in the 2016 shoot out v Rangers 2012 and we'd won that semi final penalty shoot out we may not have gone for Brendan Rodgers as manager (the **** directors jumping about in Dermot Desmond's face was rumoured to have been behind it) meaning we may not have gone on to win ten domestic trophies in a row and, also denied the craziest and funniest Scottish Cup Final ever that year and the biggest collective heads gone ever by an entire football club who were utterly raging from boardroom to supporters level.

Would the old Gretna still be around today if James Grady had not scored that last gasp winner that promoted them to the SPL?

Just a personal opinion but probably not, regardless of what league they were in the wages they were paying were unsustainable if Brooks Mileson's money dried up or, if as happened less than a year later he became ill and died, it was a house of cards and was always going to crash and burn the minute the money from Mileson stopped for whatever reason.

Yeah Ive thought about this a few times, an absolute blessing is disguise. Whole club needed a kick up the arse by this point, I hate to think what our attendances would be like now if we stuck with Deila and gave him f**k all money. As much as folk like to say its the ‘return’ of Rangers that caused the spike in season book sales it was clearly Rodgers, wasn't until that he was appointed that season tickets sales went up.

Not quite. Clyde needed a draw. Liam Keogh put ICT ahead. Ian Harty equalised from the spot with less than 20 to go. At this point Clyde would be champions. But Stevie Hislop headed the winner with about 10 mins left.

Just as relevant, if the chairman had allowed Yogi Hughes to speak to United in 2016, barely a year after we won the Scottish and finished third in the league, our club wouldn’t be totally fucked and we’d probably still be in the Premiership. Instead his attempt at a show of strength turned out to be a weakness, Yogi went in the huff, came out of the huff long enough to sign a 4 year contract, re-entered the huff, the parting of the ways happened, so did Richie Foran and we went down like a concrete parachute.

They had agreed to play at Rugby Park if they had been promoted.
