Is there any clubs from D&G playing who could even potentially move to the SoS apart from Kello? It doesn't strike me as a hotbed of amateur teams looking to take a step up or youth teams looking to add a senior side.

Dumfries has a fairly substantial Sunday League with several decent sides but in general it’s the overall costs incurred by a Senior Club that will deter most from considering the step up I’d estimate ! There’s nothing in the West of the region any more and ultimately if there’s ever any future merger with the West then Girvan , Maybole , Kello obviously , Craigmark etc would be the closest current junior sides to the normal South geographical area

Could the current amateur set up latch on underneath the SoS in the pyramid in future?

No ,the  Sunday  league is lad's who only want a game on a  Sunday nothing else.  They are not interested in a pyramid set up .The league has went from 2 leagues to 1.  Although quite a lot could play S o S   because of  the standard .

I’d agree with WRB that many of the players in the amateur League could do a decent job if they wanted to take in the training / travelling of a Senior side in the South but many are content to choose a localised Sunday game which is fair enough

Since the SoSFL gained a few clubs from the demise of the Dumfries & District AFL folding, are there any Saturday amateurs really running anymore?

I just hope that the SoSFL can keep its club numbers up. Given the dearth of potential replacements there maybe increasing pressure to allow in a few Development/Community sides from Senior clubs within the WoSFL region.

I suppose the other option is that if numbers in the SoSFL seriously reduce in the next few years, this may be the factor to facilitate a planned amalgamation or general incorporation of clubs within the WoSFL.

I’d estimate in my opinion as long as the numbers hold things will be fine but if there’s a dramatic change in the next couple of years anyone with any ambition will look to the West like several have flirted with already ! I’d say in all honesty it wasn’t the Junior big guns that was the deciding factor for most to not even contemplate any potential move but the thought that once the initial Conference season was over with its varied mix of Clubs and levels it was more the thought of what happens after that in the long term !  Potential regionalisation for any future Conferences / Divisions would make far more sense and be a lot more appealing for Clubs already with limited budgets

Only under exceptional circumstances should the sosfl lose it place at tier 6. Amalgamation with the wosfl seems to be the go to for everyone when it doesn't make a difference at all.

Unless the sosfl loses 5 or 6 clubs it should remain. If the champion gets licensed, wins the league and gets promoted then they deserve it.

It poses an issue that if there is an amalgamation of SoS and WoS then the SoS Clubs should not lose T6 status..

The sosfl should absolutely not lose tier 6 status, there is no need.

  • 2 weeks later...

Based on playing strength (as evidenced by many recent seasons in the Scottish Cup, and the South Challenge Cup), the SoSFL would certainly be the weakest of the 3 Lowland Tier 6 leagues.

Some of the EoS and WoS Tier 7 teams (and possibly even Tier 8 in the West) will be stronger than some of the Tier 6 SoS teams.

So, it might be a balanced pyramid geography wise in the Lowland area, but certainly not in terms of playing strength.

If playing strength were more of a factor, there would be 2 Tier 6 leagues (West and East), with Tier 7 West splitting into North (2nd tier West Juniors) and South (most of the current SoS).

This might actually work out better for the South team that chooses promotion, as they'll get more local games rather than going "semi-national" in the Lowland League.  As an example, suppose Threave won the Tier 7 SoS, they would then go into the Tier 6 West league, where they might play the likes of Pollok, Kilwinning, etc.  They'd find it mighty hard to get out of that league I think, but they'd get to play at a higher level with less travelling.  The day-to-day for the SoS teams would be exactly the same, as they'd still be pretty much the same teams in the same league.

Long term that will need to be looked at along with the Highland League.
