Cove 2, Annan 0

Recommended Posts

Another freezing afternoon at the Balmoral Stadium.

Cove ran out deserved winners but visiting Annan stuck well to their task and made it a close contest.

Indeed, Annan had the better chances in the first ten minutes. Big Nade, as mobile as a torpedoed destroyer, rattled the bar from distance. Another Annan forward collected the rebound and amazingly blazed over the bar with  McKenzie helpless.

Annan frustrated Cove for a while. Big Sonkur was booked for a clogging challenge on McAllister on the quarter hour and had to be careful after that. Annan packed the midfield and defence and seemed quite comfortable.

Cove broke the deadlock half way through the first half. Breaking down the left, Cove finally got in behind the visitors. The ball landed with Megginson, lurking at close range, and he rolled the ball beyond Avci in the Annan goal.

Once Cove were in front they looked comfortable.  Annan really lacked a cutting edge. Clearly Nade is used to hold the ball up but he’s not quite on the same wavelength as the guys around him. Often Annan got into good positions but coudn’t quite make them count. The half ended on a worrying note as big Swinglehurst took a powerful McAllister shot full in the face from close range, and was sparked out. He had to be helped off groggily by the physio and was ok to continue.

Annan started the second half brightly and threatened the Cove goal without really forcing McKenzie into a save. Gradually the brief Galloway squall petered out and Cove settled down again. The home team rattled Avci’s bar twice with the goalkeeper beaten; Masson’s whistling dipper from an angle at the edge of the area particularly unlucky.

Cove’s steady pressure paid off with a few minutes left. Sonkur missed a ball played through by Milne, and Masson was onto the mistake in a flash, turning the ball past the exposed Avci.

2-0 and a routine home win for Cove. Whilst not at their best you never felt Annan had enough to punish them going forward. Masson and Fyvie did nicely for Cove in the middle of the park. The ever-impressive Swinglehurst and Bradley did well for Annan with young Watson making a nuisance of himself up front.

Cove are cruising this league and will be a handful in League One next term. Annan will take heart from a determined effort after a few honking displays recently. They look decent enough for the final play off spot.

A very extensive and well written analysis that must have been done at least a few minutes after the final whistle when your feeling returned to your fingers on a bitterly cold 🥶 day at Balmoral.

I thought Broque Watson and Kylie Wilkie looked pacey and have real some talent. Was impressed with them both.

At 1-0 the game was in the balance and I thought Annan could have easily scored next.

I wouldn’t bet my own money on it! Be good to see them get the 3 points though and get nearer 3rd.

Betting on the football is never a good idea and betting on the Dons even less so, in my experience.
