Junior_Arab Posted January 23, 2020 Share Posted January 23, 2020 Tayport are struggling in a “super” league that is a shadow of its former self following the defection of all the top clubs south of Dundee. Their form has picked up a bit in the last few weeks, but anything other than a comfortable win for Talbot would be a big surprise. Tayport head to East Ayrshire this Saturday, for a fifth round tie in the Scottish Junior Cup, against holders Auchinleck Talbot. It's a big, big game for all connected with the club. For the supporters, the match may evoke memories of our three previous encounters against Talbot, all of which were Scottish Junior Cup semi-finals. What follows is an article of the first encounter with 'Bot, back in 1993... Friday 30th April, 1993. Tayport v. Auchinleck Talbot On a balmy Friday evening in Maryhill, Tayport took on the mighty Auchinleck Talbot in the semi-finals of the Scottish Junior Cup. A dozen or more busloads of supporters left our small harbour town late in the afternoon of Friday, 30th April, 1993, bound for Firhill Stadium and a night we would never forget. To set the scene, Tayport were new to the junior ranks and were enjoying only their third campaign at that level. The first two seasons had already exceeded expectations and ‘Port had become Tayside champions and had won a host of local and inter-regional cups. On the national stage, runs to the last-sixteen and the quarters of the Scottish Junior Cup had served notice that the team from north-east Fife was on the rise. After a titanic battle against local rivals Downfield in the 1992/93 quarter-finals, Tayport made it to the last-four of the competition often described as the Holy Grail. This was a monumental achievement in itself and things were about to get even better. Opponents, Auchinleck, were the outstanding team of the era. Remarkably, they had landed the ‘Scottish’ five times in the previous seven seasons and pitched up at Partick Thistle’s ground that night, well on course for three-in-a-row. Before the game, as Love Me Do, by the Beatles, played over the tannoy, there was great excitement on the terraces, in anticipation of what was, at that point, the biggest game in the club’s history. In the opening minutes of the contest, it seemed that Tayport were under siege and the match was being played in their 18-yard box. The defence held firm though and Dave Baikie’s men eventually began to get a foothold in the game. Midfielder Billy Coventry played in the incomparable Dave Reilly and he was upended inside the area for the most stonewall of penalty kicks. Up stepped Hamish Mackay to thump home from the spot and put ‘Port one up, to the delight of the huge Tayport support; a vast sea of red and white. In the second half, Jimmy Hunter picked out Jackie Devine and his right-wing cross to the far post was met by Mackay, who headed in Tayport’s second. By now, there was real belief that the Canniepairt outfit could upset the odds. Then, from the left, Dave Reilly set up his strike partner and Hamish Mackay duly wrote his name into local football folklore, completing his hat-trick and sending Tayport to the Scottish Junior Cup final. 2 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Talbot didn’t play well but yet are in the quarters of the Scottish again. Yes boys played out of position but the amount of chances created from our right with balls in we have been scoring all season today was a bad performance but constantly created chances . Nearly paid the price for missing some sitters to kill game off.
