He explained it very clearly in his post, that's the life expectancy at birth, but once you make it as far as 80 you have a much higher chance of living even longer. It's a slightly less extreme case of the old story about the life expectancy being 40 in the Middle Ages - that was strictly true, but it didn't mean that people didn't live into old age, it was just a remnant of the fact that childbirth was so risky that many newborns died and pulled down the average.

Clearly people that reach 80 are far more likely to see 90 than someone who has died at an earlier age!  Flippancy aside, someone who has reached 90 is far more likely to see 100 than someone who is 80 etc. etc.  That is just how life expectancy works.

The one thing I would say is that a lot of over 80s who have sadly died have been in care homes.
Given that the average stay in care homes is 2 years, many of these will not have had 10 years still to live.

My granny’s been in one for 12 years and is by some distance the longest serving resident, she’s had neuro surgery in the 1980s was an alcoholic for most of her life and smoked 60 a day until she took up vaping a few years back, she’ll be 90 this year
Despite her best efforts she’s somehow still in relatively good health
She’s indestructible

Some hooha in our household this morning. Wife is an EYO at a local nursery and her pal wasn't feeling very clever on Friday. Her pal done a lateral flow test which was negative then done another lateral flow test immediately after (no idea why) which came back positive. PCR test done and she's confirmed positive. Naturally her pal gave track and trace a list of all close contacts which consisted off all her work colleagues. This caused a massive panic from management who started messaging all staff this morning telling them not to get tested unless they are advised to by track and trace. Then when she realised all her staff were getting messages asking to get tested decided to phone said positive staff member to ask what she told track and trace as in their opinion all staff should have been sufficient distance apart to not be classed as a close contact. Anyway unless their PCR test results are back by 8am tomorrow the nursery will be closed.

Oh well, if the Danes are allowing it then it must be OK.

Mind you, the Danes allowed the Nazis to walk into their country completely unchallenged so maybe we shouldn't look to them for morality.

What is it with you and the Nazis? And check your WhatsApp messages, the Danes are the new good guys, Sweden are so yesterday..

See there’s a backlog from last 48h and 55.5k tests reported. That’s an insane amount.

So 1 in every 100 people in Scotland tested every day for an endemic illness. wiggo.png

Oddballs.
