How are the vaccine numbers going? We're pretty poor on a daily basis last I'd seen.

About 3,000 + 16,000 comparing to yesterday's numbers (I do wish they would show the increase and not just the massive total each day)

Got a letter for my second jag, precisely 8 weeks (and about 15 minutes) after the first appointment.

Daily Cases Update:  Day 17 of dropping cases and down a fantastic 6.47% to 226.8    Infectivity drops sharply to 7.9% and looking at todays numbers does appear to be falling quickly.   I still believe we will reach a "bottom" that is far higher than when in lockdown. I  still estimate around 200 cases per 100K.  This is still born out by many of the councils currently around this mark struggling to get lower. Like in parts of Ayrshire.

I believe the scaremongering around 100K cases a day in the UK is not happening.  I suspect most people are actually behaving more reasonably with everything opened carefully instead of piling into each others houses.  Fully expect England and Wales to peak in next few days.  Northern Ireland is just an enigma.

Total Cases Scotland 7 days from 14th July to 20th July  were  13,256 now 12,399 down 6.47%.  Positivity was 8.6%  now 7.9%.   Cases per 100k were  242.5 now 226.8

Home Nations Daily update  :  UK Average 472.3 to 488.0 up 3.32%, England 510.9 to 529.1 up 3.56%, Wales  210.9 to 210.6 up 0.05%, Northern Ireland  337.7 to 374.6 up 10.93%

Really kicking off in Northern Ireland where cases have risen 45% in 3 days.

England now romping clear in Europe, followed by Spain, Northern Ireland, Netherlands, Scotland, Portugal & Wales.  The vast majority of Europe has had no 3rd wave.  Poland still at 1.8, Germany 11.9 etc

Latest European figures today. Spain 381.1 to 385.0 , Netherlands  383.8 to 356.2 ,  Portugal 226.9 to 226.7, Greece 180.6 to 178.7, Ireland 163.4 to 167.2, France 125.1 to 153.1

Scotland peaks in Wave 3 at 425.1 for 27th June to 3rd July, (UK was 229.9) . Cases that day were 23,222 and positivity 10.8%

Scotland previously peaked in wave 2 at 301.9 for figures 29th Dec to 4th Jan, (UK was 642.1)    Cases that day were 16,496 and test positivity rate was 11.9%

Council progress in last 24 Hours as follows.

Chairman of the Commons Science committee.

My committee took evidence months ago now from Sir John Bell, the very distinguished regius professor at Oxford, who said that what should happen is, of course people testing positive for Covid need to isolate, but contacts should be able to take a test and isolate if positive, but go about their business if negative.

That would avoid much of the disruption that we have and, actually, and Sir John made this point, would cause people to be more compliant with the advice.

Many people think that 10 days isolation is pretty onerous and some of them will not comply with it.

We know that on August 16 a new system will come in, in which you can take a test if you’re named as a contact and only isolate if you’re positive - I don’t see why we can’t begin that now on July 23 rather than wait.

Mail reader Natalie Patterson writes from Louth, Lincolnshire, where she saw a woman wandering from shop to shop along the High Street scanning the QR code on the doors with her mobile phone. Like a cautious roulette player covering the waterfront, she was trying to increase her chances of getting pinged. And it paid off, in spades.

At B&Q, where the woman repeated the exercise, Natalie overheard her telling a friend: ‘It’s brilliant, I’ve only worked seven days in the past 10 weeks!’

None of this needed to happen. Test and Trace should have been made obsolete by Britain’s successful vaccination programme. But, as I wrote on Tuesday, having blown the thick end of £40 billion on the technology, they were always going to use it.''

And another.

158 new cases in Australia taking the seven day average to 130.

They've fucked it. With Delta having an R0 in the range of 6-7, only 12% fully vaccinated and very low levels of population immunity, I'm not even sure a full blown stay at home lockdown will get the R < 1.

Down-under travel bubble bursts

New Zealand is suspending a quarantine-free travel bubble with Australia for at least eight weeks because of a spike in coronavirus infections there.

“We’ve always said that our response would evolve as the virus evolved. This is not a decision we have taken lightly, but it is the right decision to keep New Zealanders safe,” Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said on Friday.

Millions of Australians are back under tight restrictions amid fresh outbreaks of Covid-19.

New South Wales reported a record 136 new infections on Friday, with state premier Gladys Berejiklian describing the escalating situation as a "national emergency".

The New Zealand government says it “remains committed” to the travel bubble and hopes it will eventually reopen.

NSW officials say stay-at-home orders are likely to be extended into next month

That lasted long. Who could have have seen it coming?!

Meanwhile, the media has been awfully quiet about Sweden for a long time now. I wonder why that is!

They're up and down like a yoyo like every other country, top of the European table in the last wave.

All without making it illegal to sit on a park bench. They've done well.

Dear Sir Ian,

Misleading statistics used by the Scottish Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Covid Recovery.

I write to you regarding the above matter.

You may be aware of recent media reports concerning statistics that were used by the Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Covid Recovery, John Swinney MSP.

In a graphic posted online, Mr Swinney made various claims about the effectiveness of wearing masks to prevent Covid, most of which appear to be unfounded. International fact checking websites have previously investigated some of the claims and found them to be at least partly false.

After reports emerged in the Scottish press, the Deputy First Minister, via a spokesperson, refused to provide a source for the information in the graphic. Neither was it deleted.

The First Minister subsequently said she would “reflect” on the use of the graphic but 24 hours later, it still had not been deleted, nor had the Scottish Government provided a source for the information.

At the time of this statement these statistics were not available in the public domain. They appear to be unverified and misleading, at best. The Scottish Government have been asked to release the statistics repeatedly and refused to do so. Neither have they formally corrected the information and deleted the erroneous statistics.

The correct use of statistics is vital, particularly when issuing public health guidance during a pandemic. As such, I would be grateful if you could investigate this matter and take appropriate action as you see fit.

Yours sincerely,

Annie Wells MSP

Dear Ms Wells,

Thank you for your letter of 21 July to Professor Sir Ian Diamond about a graphic on face masks shared by the Deputy First Minister.

Mr Swinney has deleted the tweet in question and clarified his meaning . I welcome the commitment by him and the First Minister to using verifiable statistics in future, so that government communications can command public trust.

Yours sincerely,

Sir David Norgrove

I dont know who’s more cringe Swinney or Wells.

Honestly surprised the police or MI5 let him conduct and business on a private email account of their secure servers.

When I was a Civil Servant I had a GSI email address which was used for work related comms. Had I used a private email on a works computer I would have been disciplined and if it was a repeat offence I would have been sacked.

Try working in financial services.   You can't get to most mail sites.  Blocked by web filters.  If you do find one you can get to and someone finds out what you've done you'll be escorted off the premises.  Similarly if you send any work related email to a personal account (even you're own) and it's picked up you can pack up your desk.
