The whole relationship between Scottish football and Scottish politics is fascinating. Since devolution it seems like Scottish politics has used football as a way to connect with people and make the Holyrood government relevant to people’s lives. Older P&Bers can enlighten me but I don’t think many MPs ever expressed views about Scottish football on or off the pitch in, for example, the 1970s or 80s when issues like racism, sectarianism and hooliganism were far more widespread and serious than they are now. Yet we have far more involvement now than previously. Did MPs ever comment on Rangers effectively never signing Catholics or on serious casual problems at, say, Hibs and Aberdeen in the 80s?  Now Lennon and McCoist tell each other to f**k off and we have a government summit.

Part of it is the newly created Parliament wanting to connect with people, part of it also the influence of a Blairism, which saw apeing the proles enthusiasms as a key part of maintaining a political connection. Thus you had The PM giving his opinion on whether the England manager should be fired as well as the trial of Deirdre on Corrie.  For all Scottish politics radical flexing it remains here that Blair’s legacy lives on, ironic as it could end up dissolving the country he was elected leader of.

The other aspect of Blairism that lives on in the relationship between is the nudging and the criminalisation of behaviour - Blair’s government brought in Asbos and ‘five a day’ requirements, in Scotland we combine banning happy hour and minimum pricing with bringing in legislation (initially supported by all parties lest anyone forget) to potentially criminalise football fans for behaviour not illegal among others. Here though there is a departure from the shadow of the pretty straight guy. Scottish nationalism is a civic nationalism, a defining feature is that it sees independence and nationalism as a road to improvement. ‘Work as if you live in the early days of a better nation’ - clearly the better nation might not have a place for yer auld da or a load of 17 year olds drinking Buckfast on a supporters bus. This is different to how nationalism often presents itself, there isn’t much harking back to the past in Scotland. Maybe the reluctance to trust football fans with alcohol, in the fanzone or stadium, does hark back to a more austere Scottishness but I think that’s a reach. I’m a cynic by nature and we could do with a lot of changes in Scotland so perhaps they are right to do it.

What a long post to say nothing in.

After the 1980 Scottish Cup Final riot the Conservatives passed the Criminal Justice Scotland Act which means that even 40 years on you can't pay 5 quid to buy a plastic tumbler of warm fizzy pischlager at the football but those jolly rugger funsters can at Murrayfield.

In the late 80s The Thatcher Government were keen on bringing in ID cards for football supporters, and a number of Scottish Tory MPs were in favour. There was quite a campaign against it at the time among fans groups. The idea was dropped after the Hillsborough tragedy.

Some dafty (probably Mad Mickey Forsyth) decided it would be a good idea for Thatcher herself to attend the 1988 Scottish Cup final. The result was  both sets of supporters singing "Maggie, Maggie, get to f*ck".

Just a thought but I wonder with the higher case rates if the risk trade-off of the Oxford/AZ vaccine is now in favour of using it in younger people given the shit load of supply we have? Either way I suspect it's a moot point because it would be borderline impossible to convince under 40's to take this vaccine after it was previously stopped over safety concerns.

Well she might. But you'll have to be double vaxxed, separated by at least two metres and both wearing hazmat suits.

And you're not allowed to enjoy it.

It won’t change.  That trade off was a comparison of them not being vaccinated

Some of us would still be able to have a right good go at her then.

Channel 4 should stop presenting this garbage as fact ("bad news") rather than opinion.

No, JCVI advice is that the AZ is much less risky than actually getting covid but that when virus prevalence is low, it would be preferable to wait a few weeks and get a different vaccine when it is offered.

As covid rates increase, there's a bigger risk of actually catching covid on a day-to-day basis if you're unvaccinated. Covid itself has a much higher rate of blood clots in all age groups than the Oxford vaccine. If prevalence continues to increase and the AZ vaccine is the one we have a glut of then it may well be that the JCVI revise their advice.

Some craic being caught between the Lovejoys screaming 'Lock us down forever, its the only way to keep us safe!!! Look at how many people variants have killed' and the anti-vaxxers 'Vaccines are a double dose of gene manipulation, look at the evidence of how many people they've killed' and not knowing what bunch of complete and utter lunatics to laugh at harder.

Wild that there are two such polarising camps who hate each other's views and all the sane folk in the middle hate the fucking lot of them cos they are all talking some amount of shite.

Add the 3.8% of people who voted against a bunch of Primary kids getting to watch the Scotland game on Monday to the gallows list.

Where are you getting this from?

You’re way off the mark here.  The JCVI advice against under 40’s getting AZ is nothing to do with catching Covid, it’s comparing the risk of getting life threatening blood clots compared to the risk of catching Covid and getting seriously ill or dying.

it was never anything to do with infection rates.  That’s a public health issue, not a JCVI issue.

Mask restrictions along with capacity limits at pubs, restaurants, gyms and other businesses will be lifted next week on 15th June in California, USA.

There’s absolutely no need for vaccine passports.

You’re right there is absolutely no need for them, but when sleezebags like Blair, Hancock and Gove can line their pockets (and their pals) with them, you can bet they will be introduced to appease the lovejoys that despite being double vaccinated still need to be kept safe “just incase”

There’s no chance the UK government lift all restrictions on June 21st is there? YouGov’s latest polling all but confirms it.

There never, ever, eeeeeeeever was. Ever.

See 12 weeks, operation moonshot, normal by November, Christmas, Easter is the new Christmas.
