Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Residents of Gigha, which is among those Scottish islands which has not moved down to level one, are also disappointed.

The island's heritage trust welcomed the further relaxation of Covid rules, but said islanders had worked for more than a year to suppress the virus and had hoped to move down to level one.

A trust said the island had been lucky to have no Covid cases and, while there was some nervousness around the return of visitors last summer, there were businesses on Gigha highly reliant on tourism.

A spokesman for the Scottish government said: "Islands that are easily reachable from the mainland, including Bute, Skye and Cumbrae as well as Gigha, will remain in level two to prevent transmission of the virus.

"We have always said we will keep plans under review and accelerate the lifting of restrictions as soon as it is safe to do so."

Further confirmation that 'data not dates' mantra has actually ended up in err, no actual data being used at all. Instead the SG is gormlessly flinging darts at a map in setting restrictions based on what they think people will do.

What exactly do they think people are going to travel to fucking Gigha to do if it is in level 1 and not level 2?

Look mate you need to chill out with this,

I actually do think the government and media   are  trying to be manipulative with their press releases, but not because they  won't to permanently turn the world into something resembling the movie demolition man,  I'm pretty sure it's a ploy to get people to continue to adhere to what's still in place rather than thinking "oh well only a few weeks till it's allowed anyway, might aswell..)

There was a difference of opinion on Friday about the intent of the press conference. I'm just highlighting how much cold water has been poured on the previously fixed June 21st easing in the past week or so.

We really should be well past this mass panic from the top every time a variant emerges but it seems that they only listen to the advisors that they'd like to.

There are plenty of accounts of experts out there on social and conventional media that explain the continued efficacy of the vaccines against the new variants, the complete normality of variants and how they are fully expected and not something that should be raising anxiety/fear and the non-effect these variants are having on genuinely serious cases thanks to the astounding success story of vaccines.

But it seems that the hysterical angst and panic will continue with disregard of calming voices. Very much a case of picking and choosing who should be listened to. This is probably what causes me most concern and I'll admit, I've been a ball of anxiety all day. I'm genuinely concerned that there is no reasonable way out of this any time soon because those in power do not wish for there to be. I've been more and more concerned over the last few years that we are increasingly living in a nanny state and the last 16 months has fully driven that opinion home.

As stupid and illogical as that sounds, that's where I am because I simply can't understand why harder questions are not asked of these people and their decision making, why a balanced view is rarely presented and certainly not given the same level of consideration as doomsday scenarios and definitely cannot fathom why they can continue to peddle that they 'just don't know' in terms of the effect that vaccines can have on new variants of concern when the data is out there.

Quite apart from completely ignoring the data to pick and choose again, I'm enjoying the grasp of Scotland's geography that leads to Gigha being lumped in with Bute and Cumbrae in terms of accessibility for the mainland population in general. A village in the Kintyre Peninsula being as easily reached from Scotland's more heavily populated areas as fucking Largs, obviously.

John MacKay was pressing Swinney on the STV News tonight about the case number obsession and not hospitalisations, which was good to see.

There she goes again.

Besides a lot of the waffle, the pivot continues as she's talking about travel being fine when vaccinated, and things like masks and distancing being in the bin once the rollout is complete.

Not exactly 'Zero Covid', is it now?

.

Prime Minister Peston has announced June 21st isn’t happening in England.

Surely not? I thought it was normality by November... A Christmas cracker... Easter being the new Christmas....

Peston is a complete and utter slaver and some of his 'opinion pieces' and 'takes' have been among the worst of this whole sorry affair - and that's saying something.

Kwasi Kwarteng was on TV this morning saying it's very likely to be going ahead.

The Indian variant giving Johnson his convenient excuse to backslide yet again without admitting he's shat himself. An utter fraud of a man.

This is all sounding like the decision is made. If there is no uptick in deaths and hospitalisations across the country, entirely unjust as well.

Plus they are on a 5 weekly review cycle to our 3 so if not movement on 21 June it will be into August at the earliest.

There might be a 3rd wave of people testing positive but there won't be a 3rd wave of deaths.

There will be people who test positive, die and are counted in the Covid deaths stats this winter.

Someone posted a link about an outbreak of asymptomatic infection in a care home in Belgium. The same thing will happen in the winter, someone gets hospitalised and dies of other causes but the PCR test will hit positive so chalk it up to Covid.
