Coronavirus (COVID-19)

This thread has become a roller coaster.

Mornings - outrage over perceived issue (yesterday was a belter)
Afternoon - cigars out. Everything going right way. Govt not doing what we were outraged about this morning.
Evening - starting to build up to the morning rage.

It's truly bizarre what's happening. In that quote from devi she mentions unvaccinated people shouldn't be allowed places where they can spread it. As far as I was aware the vaccine doesnt stop you from spreading it either? Just protects you from taking a bad reaction to it. Someone needs to call her out on her views and lies

It is actually becoming increasingly clear that the vaccines are going to have a quite considerable impact on transmission, which you would expect with such effective vaccines.

Sridhar and her ilk have a fringe, bias, and warped worldview, and it should not be imposed on western democratic societies.

She was discussing how vaccine passports are going to be inevitable and then she said youngsters need an “incentive” to get the vaccine. Later on she went on to say

“You can really create an incentive to people to say if you want to go to a concert, if you want to be active in places where spreading occurs then you have to protect and make sure you’re not spreading it to others”

Disgusts me in all honesty

This has been in the works for a while.

It's a backdoor route to digital ID. Devi is someone smarter's pawn here.

35 deaths registered overnight. 543 new cases (2.6% of tests), 750 people in hospital (-34 ), 69 patients in ICU (-2).

2.6 percent positivity. Oaft.

By my arithmetic that's all but one patient leaving the hospital in box tho,  at least there isn't another 35 to take their place

Even if she was, she has no way of implementing such a system.

I think she's just so immersed in and blinkered by Covid she's forgotten that we managed to live just fine without these types of things alongside countless minor illness causing viruses.

Devi seems to be dipping her toe into behavioural science, not sure why the media are entertaining her. If she thinks that the threat of a vaccine passport will be an effective way to get the vaccination numbers up then it should be caveated by 2 things, firstly she's not a an expert in this field and secondly take up so far have been extraordinarily high.

Let's not be complacent with take up but until the take up is alarmingly low let's not get into a discussion about taking rights away from people who don't wish to get a vaccine instead promote the positive messages about what a vaccine provides people and society more generally.

We are nearly 12 months in and people still can't get their heads round the fact that announced deaths take place over a period of previous days, weeks, and even months.

Truly remarkable.

Not everyone dies in hospital.

He also hasn't accounted for new admissions. 34 less people in hospital doesn't mean 34 left hospital yesterday. In reality it's likely 35 deaths and then roughly the same number of people being newly admitted as walking out of the hospital.

No it isn't.

It's far more likely to be in the region of around 20-22 actual deaths yesterday, a further 70-80 people leaving hospital, and maybe 55-60 people going in.

Or there or there abouts

It's not Devi that will implement it.

The process here would be the government telling the Times editorial staff (either informally or through the official committee that liaisons with the media on national security) to run pro Vaccine passport stories. Then the Times need to find someone stupid enough to write the article and obviously Devi is the perfect person.

Opinion columns don't just appear out of thin air. There is always an agenda.

You also need to account for people testing positive while recieving hospital care for another condition.

There's maybe an argument there regarding BGE kids, but again, given how much has been missed, extending this school year seems sensible.
I'm genuinely astounded to learn that new timetables are anticipated in June for seniors.  It simply compresses things for now in a way that's not needed.

How else do you imagine Highers and Advanced Highers will be taught in the time left if we started back in August, when there is always a bit a hurry-up to get get completed when we start in June? Or are you thinking that next year's exams will be delayed too? (For those schools mental enough to try and do 6 or more National 5s in S4 without doing any work for them unofficially in S3 will find it even harder). When do you think the teachers (particularly Guidance staff) will get the transition stuff done for the new S1 intake (this is usually done partly during study leave but not having S1s for the month before the holidays normally gives some breathing room for that to be done)?

Eh?

Courses can comfortably run from August.  They more or less did this year for goodness' sake.  Indeed, in any year, loads of kids in S5 and S6 only join classes at that point due to re-jigging in the wake of exam results.

I don't see next year's exams needing delayed, but if removing a couple of units helps deal with a slightly truncated course, then that can again happen.

It is going to be very different looking final term from usual, but S1 transition and induction can be accommodated relatively comfortably.  It's not that huge an undertaking.  It'll just be something else that needs squeezed in.  It's a much better idea for features like that to take the hit, than for those seeking qualifications to suffer further.
