Ron Aldo
'The goalposts aren't shifting!'I try to take anything the mainstream media reports on with a pinch of salt but it's difficult not to get pissed off at headlines like this.

Elixir
This is very interesting and highlights why the recent fear porn over variants should eventually calm down and lead to more rational thinking going forward. Should...

The fact it's from Tim Spector, who seemed to be fairly rational and pragmatic, is pretty disheartening. I'm hoping the reporting has somewhat misquoted him, but maybe that's just me being optimistic.

Bairnardo
So social distancing to remain in place forever.....Except.... SD on it's own makes zero difference. Schools wont stay closed, nor should they. WFH will be binned by those businesses who it doesnt suit. Socialising will ramp up, and if hospitality is restricted, household mixing will increase massively, since no one will accept limitations on that score. They really havent thought this through. They are burning through their grace period already. Infection rate will pick up in summer. No one will care. No one will buy further restrictions on the above things. All that's left is shelling hospitality and travel/tourism into the dust. Their call if they want to do that. Hopefully it results in career suicide for all concerned.

Should... So the SA variant shouldn't actually get a foothold in the UK, and even if it did, it would be no worse than catching the flu virus. OK. carry on.

I mean they are usually in the summer and outdoors so natural transmission is low without a % vaccinated against the virus. I would be interested to know the plan for say nightclubs and things I could see it being another 6 months/year for them, but the business owners need clarity now. The Telegraph is well connected in the Government and they will know the actual plans so let's hear them now.

DeeTillEhDeh
Think that’s yesterday’s numbers. There were only 584 new cases today and further drops in hospital and ICU. 108 in ICU - down 91710 in hospital - down 16584 new cases - test positivity going up from 5.9% to 6.9%First two figures are good new - although the drop in hospital admissions was not as big as yesterday's figures. Positivity has crept up over the past few days - hope that's just a temporary phenomenon.

Ron Aldo
So the SA variant shouldn't actually get a foothold in the UK, and even if it did, it would be no worse than catching the flu virus. OK. carry on. That's how I'm reading it as well. The only slight concern I have is that the limited data they have is for younger people. Mild symptoms are likely to have more of an impact on a frail 80 something year old than a healthy 30 something year old. However, I hope that if there's any chance of the SA variant ever becoming the "dominant" one then by that point the vaccines should have been tweaked to be able to deal with it more effectively.I'd imagine this is going to be the way of it for some time. It's no surprise that Covid is doing what every other virus does and mutated. We'll get an updated vaccine for the SA variant but there'll then be another variant which for which we'll need another slightly tweaked vaccine and so on.

ICU is the worry, pre pandemic the capacity was only 170 I would imagine they will insist on the ICU numbers getting to double digits before they consider it completely under control. Obviously hope that some of the extra capacity will stay when we will need it again for say a bad flu season.

The flu vaccine is tweaked every year and compared to C19 vaccines is pretty rubbish, somehing like 50% efficacy at best. The point is, the SA variant should not be used as a bogie man excuse for extending restrictions.

This might be an incredibly stupid question, but what happens say if those who are positive (or a majority) are the only people getting tested - shooting the positivity rate through the roof - but still only 500odd actual positive cases per day?
