Coronavirus (COVID-19)

As stated, AstraZeneca say they are confident it still protects against the need for hospitalisation. In any case, transmission will naturally plummet in summer, before a booster is available by the autumn. There's also absolutely nothing to suggest the variants from South Africa or Brazil will suddenly become dominant over the UK one. Indeed, I was just reading that the opposite is a distinct possibility.

It is yet more unacceptable shifting of the goalposts which simply has to stop. We cannot safeguard against every single person getting ill or possibly dying at the ruin of a free democratic society.

It's not shifting of the goalposts really if the vaccine doesn't as hoped stop mass hospitalisations, and as projected (unnecessarily pessimisticly imo) still fucks the health care system.

I agree that I these models / interviewees seem to be bypassing the serious illness aspect of the vaccine, and that is a concern - but at the same time the public aren't stupid. If it transpires that the health care system is fine, then no-one is going to accept many, if any, restrictions.

You just seem to want to discount anything you don't fancy as scaremongering/beyond the pale.

What's going to happen will happen because of the numbers at the time - not because of paper thin projections and/or feel good proclamations made weeks and months in advance.

Although again, if it still protects against hospitalisation and death, and offers a reduction in transmission, then what's the problem.

You may feel a bit shit for a couple of days. So what.

The problem is everyone involved in the test were healthy and not elderly. So if mild illness appears in that cohort it's highly likely that vulnerable groups will have worse outcomes..

This is going back a bit - and you call the UK a free democratic society

Seen this earlier, quite shocking which ever way it is looked at.

Police have been accused of abusing emergency Covid powers by bursting into a terrified couple’s bedroom and hurling a pet dog out of the way.

Defence lawyer Aamer Anwar – who is part of a watchdog group monitoring the use of temporary coronavirus laws – has called the late-night raid the “worst incident to date”.

Chef Cameron Meechan, 26, claims he and girlfriend Danielle McHugh were in bed watching Netflix when about 10 police officers broke the door off its hinges and wrestled him to the ground.

AAH, But what were they watching ????

Fucking hell.

Lassie might as well jump out and get herself a new phone now. She won't be seeing that one again.

I'll be very surprised if they actually raided it due to Covid complaints. More than likely duff intelligence.

It reminds me of this

You're right, 'life' for the past 11 months is much better than it was before all this!

If just seen a guy called Ben Wallace (apparently he is the UKG defence secretary - nope me neither) on the news saying pretty much the same thing based on the (non peer reviewed) AZ protection deficiency against the SA variant. It certainly seems to be the current direction of travel. I get the impression there is real disappointment at this discovery (assuming it's officially ratified) amongst the powers that be.

So, is this a Tory minister suggesting the same as Swinney?

Who is T-I-G going to vote for now?

For the avoidance of doubt, once ICU and hospital numbers come down, restrictions should be successively loosened. If they go back up because of a variation which isn’t protected against, then we revisit it - we don’t keep restrictions going “just in case”.
