It's good to see that footage of a pub in the Isle of Man last night. Normality. No distancing, no masks, just a busy pub.

That's where we should be the day after the last person has got their second jag. If not before.

I've been watching some of the Australian football as well. It seems like the stranger experience now, after getting used to no crowds.

Aye, I do think in NSW/Victoria they have some restrictions on capacity, upto 5k I believe. that will likely remain until after vaccinations.

I highlight this as an illustration that Australia, NZ  (and IoM) won't suddenly introduce new restrictions after they open their borders once vaccination is completed. They will continue as they are now with none, or very few.

Therefore, once Scotland has been vaccinated then there is absolutely no reason why we cannot immediately follow them, rather than this Swinney claim of continued restrictions for an undertermined period of time for an unknown reason.

I'm all over the place trying to comprehend the rationale of the "They can't go offering false hope" posters on here.

Imagining them casually explaining that to a business owner currently mulling over whether to fold after furlough ends.... Or even worse, giving out "told you so" chat in August when Scotgov are pressured into opening up and admitting the whole narrative was just to make sure we didn't get over excited.

When the vaccines were first being rolled out, Whitty or someone like that did say that at the current rate of vaccination (not sure what that figure was) they didn't think it would be enough to mitigate deaths and stop the nhs from being overwhelmed, but this got kind of drowned pit in the outpouring of relief iirc
From that model though, they don't look like they're considering that the vaccine is doing pretty well in most cases so far of stopping severe disease. I could be missing that though as a pot of it is gobbledygook to me - but it looks like the focus is on transmission? If loads of people catch it but for the vast vast majority it doesn't require hospital treatment, then what's the issue?
I think the panic on here is extremely presumptuous - if deaths are dropping like a stone and hospital numbers are miles down (even while cases remain relatively high, no govt is going to be able to justify continued measures, no matter how much of a dictator you think Nikkkola is.
Maybe, just maybe, if a concerning new strain / variant comes into play, some light measures may be justified for the few months it takes to get a booster online, but even then it will be an extremely hard sell, and they'd need to show the variant is properly dangerous ie completely avoids contemporary vaccines.
Right now it's doing great as R is mitigated to well below 1 by the restrictions.

Our bullshit filter is used up and needing replaced with a clean new one?

Having feet firmly planted on the ground is not a bad thing and part of the Scottish mental attitude towards life in general, its in our comedy as well. It's born out of the hard lessons we have learned and suffered for generations throughout history and our fantastic weather. For example having the ever chest puffing English next door and believing that we would win the World Cup in 1978 are in there. But when we celebrate, we celebrate harder than anyone.

I think the 52k yesterday is the highest proportionate daily tally of any UK nation so far.

About time, much needed etc. But it’s been a hell of a week for vaccines - credit where it’s due.

500 done today probably

Andrew Pollard, professor of paediatric infection and immunity and chief investigator on the Oxford vaccine trial, said: "This study confirms that the pandemic coronavirus will find ways to continue to spread in vaccinated populations, as expected, but, taken with the promising results from other studies in South Africa using a similar viral vector, vaccines may continue to ease the toll on health care systems by preventing severe disease."

Surly the above would confirm that we can NEVER stop transmission, so opening everything up, including the borders and foreign travel, must be an absolute given due to the evidence above, otherwise it seems rather pointless as we'd need to cut ourselves off for all eternity ???
