Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Are we not back to Trump drinking bleach here? Drink all the mouthwash you want but it's not going to your lungs....
Not quite - the implication is that there should be less of the virus on your saliva and consequently less in any saliva droplets when you cough.

The issue is though - would you not need to be using mouthwash far more frequently than is practical?

The point of the Swedish strategy isn't to eliminate infections. If you go for herd immunity you are obviously going to have more positive tests than locked down areas! The trick is to protect the vulnerable. The only way to judge it will be by deaths when the pandemic is over.

Also saying Sweden = Norway is the height of ignorance. There are some big differences.

The problem they have is they've basically shat it in their game of chicken. They bet the house that their exposure in the first wave would mean they would not be hit anywhere near as hard in the second wave, even going as far as to announce they were approaching herd immunity. Now its become clear that was wishful thinking, they're scrambling to rescue the situation. I don't think they really had the appetite to go through another wave like the first again.

Worth looking into how different countries compile their statistics before cherrypicking direct comparisons to fit a preferred narrative. My understanding is that Norway was going out of its way to make it difficult to classify a death as COVID related if comorbidities were involved earlier this year, while Sweden were attempting to be as accurate as possible with a similar approach to the UK. Having said that Sweden's now apparent second wave is definitely not good news and it is probably just as well that vaccines with > 90% efficacy appear to be just around the corner.

Beyond that maybe just as well that Cardinal Winning is no longer with us:

A third of pupils isolating in Hull. Are there options for them to learn remotely during that isolation period?

I can't speak for Hull but I know that kids who are isolating here are given work to complete while they are off school, teachers are in contact via Teams to take in pieces of work, answer questions and provide feedback.

When I went through my puzzling phase of posting lots of stories about kids sent home from school for an unsanctioned haircut I think most of them were from Hull.

Mouthwash kills coronavirus within 30 seconds in laboratory tests, study finds

https://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/news/uk/2655067/mouthwash-kills-coronavirus-within-30-seconds-in-laboratory-tests-study-finds/

The preliminary result comes ahead of a clinical trial into whether using over-the-counter mouthwash has the potential to reduce the levels of Covid-19 in a patient’s saliva.

The Cardiff University report said that mouthwashes containing at least 0.07% cetypyridinium chloride (CPC) showed “promising signs” of being able to combat the virus.

The report – The Virucidal Efficacy of Oral Rinse Components Against SARS-CoV-2 In Vitro – is yet to be peer reviewed but supports another study published last week that found CPC-based mouthwashes are effective in reducing Covid’s viral load.

Mouthwash will be the new toilet roll, let the bulk buying begin....

Handy if you need a need a negative Covid test when you're going on holiday and you're a Margaret Ferrier type.

Apologies if this has already been covered and ignore the dreadful English, but a few pubs/bars/whatever in Dumfries (Tier 2) have posted that they've been told they can't serve drink outside because they don't have permanent kitchens (even if they're serving food). With the tier 2 rules stating you can drink inside with a meal but need to sit outside if you're just planning on bevying without food, I don't see what difference this makes in terms of sitting in a beer garden. Are we not wanting to give these places any chance to trade?

I'm fairly certain the legislation does say the food has to be prepared on the premises.

Just now, Billy Jean King said:

This was reported last week. It was the local D&G interpretation of the regs apparently. Each authority is allowed to interpret the regs as they see fit. Not being applied that way across the board as Aberdeen boozers demonstrated last week.

It seems absolutely mental that a council would stop pubs selling someone a pint outside because they don't have the capacity to make either fish and chips or a macaroni.
