Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Had what is probably a ridiculous thought but maybe not as people are already absolutely fucked with the ramifications of this pandemic, whether that be suffering from the illness itself or one of the associated problems with loss - family/friend death, unemployment or just the general feeling of isolation etc.

Anyway, how long would it take in theory, to not just suppress the virus if you simply banned people from going anywhere or doing anything?

A few weeks is my guess, taking into account the incubation period and the like and the period of still being able to pass the virus on.

So why not close the world down for that period?

I'm serious here - no fucking about. For 4/6 weeks whatever it would take people, other, sadly for them, emergency services, are unable to go anywhere at all.

Put a plan in place so that people have the supplies necessary and just go for it.

China did it but we don’t have anything like the resources to even lock down a city never mind the uk.
Our lockdown was a bit of a farce and was a few weeks too late. No excuses Italian doctors were literally shouting at the tv telling us not to go with herd immunity. Two weeks extra economy for a decade of cuts and a ruined economy. It’s beyond comprehension.

To properly flush out the virus you would have to have an ultra strict “ do not leave your home under any circumstances except an emergency “ with harsh punishments for breakers. You’d then need to army to deliver food and supplies to peoples houses. Emergency services, healthcare and utilities workers would have to bunk up in temporary camps at their workplace for the entire lockdown duration.
Thats the only way you can get on top of it now

Can be done. Here in Melbourne we were recording hundreds of cases a day two months ago. 6 weeks of lockdown. WFH where possible, leave home for essential work, shopping for essentials, healthcare or outdoor exercise (limited to 1 hour a day).  Wearing a mask whenever you leave the house. Not allowed to travel more than 5km from home. Today's the 14th day in a row with no cases.

back in early july when we were only getting a tiny handful of cases per day it was reported that the virus was eliminated outside of medical settings,  perhaps the opining of the tourism industry allowed the virus to find it's way back from elsewhere then with the big opening of schools etc it was able to spread in the community again

Sare one for the "Pubs Open; Schools Shut" Brigade

Not sure who the brigade you mention are, certainly haven’t seen many on here focused on pubs vs schools, but even so is it really a “sare one”?

One rogue pub owner who should hopefully now be correctly punished for encouraging that sort of thing (which occurred due to an outpouring of relief caused by an event that hasn’t happened in 23 years) doesn’t say anything about the industry as a whole.
