Not sure if this should be in the politics thread or here.

What do you make of Boris' claim that Scotland was helped by England and we couldn't have furloughed without them?

You could obviously argue that if we had full powers then we could have locked down earlier and came out sooner.

If we were Independent could we survive something like this happening again? Not saying we couldn't just what financial clout do we have? It seems like England has just printed money and will need it paid back at some point.

Seems like a bit of desperation from the Tories.

Furlough is being paid for by borrowing money, an independent Scotland could borrow money too, same as just about every other country in the world

He’s right. Scotland have gone by the advise of the Sage and the UK scientific advisors at all stages. At some point Nicola Sturgeon has taken the advice and decided to be more cautious.

I struggle to see how Scotland could’ve furloughed as an independent nation and a situation like this is surely likely to sway the general opinion towards feeling as though being part of the UK is definitely best for the majority of our futures.

Scotland as an independent nation would’ve had its own advisors but that not to say decisions made would’ve been much different or better especially considering Sir Patrick Valence and Chris Whitty are thought of so highly worldwide.

But the scheme is not unique to the UK other countries are doing similar (I’m sure I read France have extended the scheme for 2 years) and we won’t know how many jobs are saved until its withdrawn in the autumn.

No matter your views on Scottish Independance this mantra that wee are too wee,too poor, or too stupid is bollocks.

The same way almost every nation that managed to do it. Ireland for example. It’s not like only countries with a population of say over 50 million have one.

Couldn't agree more.

Scotland set up its own advisory group in April (one notable member being Prof Devi Sridhar) and since then we have seen a divergence of outcomes.

the Scottish Government introduced a scheme to help out newly self-employed people who weren't covered by the UK-wide scheme, whereas down south there are still 3Million+ folk left with no income and no work. Therefore, Scotland not only could have handled a furlough scheme without the UK, but has done.

It's honestly hilarious that shit like this even gets debate time. We seem to be the only country in the world where if we were independent we wouldn't be able to do all these things that every other independent country in the world can fucking do, even ones poorer than us.

Too wee, too poor, too stupid. Their tact hasn't changed.

They did, and they'll surely have seen now how everything they were told by unionists has fallen to pieces. It's no surprise to see Independence polling at over 50% now, Boris Johnson trying to claim yesterday that they ARE delivering devolution to us by handing us powers back from Brussels is completely laughable.

Fear and lies is the main weapon they have, their ace card to pensioners is “what about your state pension” (it works if you look at the voting demographics). They fail to mention that if you have paid into the system then the UK govt are legally obliged to pay it, that’s why Benidorm Brits can enjoy their UK pension while lying  on a Spanish beach or Bondi  beach, or wherever else.

This so much. Usually played twice a week and was alright for the first couple of months but I’ve been really missing it badly the last couple of months, as much for the carry-on as the football.

I for one support the SG keeping your shite-flinging 'banter' on hold for the foreseeable future.

If you assume that the Scottish Government's over riding concern is the smooth return to schools for kids on Aug 11th, then it makes perfect sense that they aren't going to take any further risks for the next three weeks.

If they open something up, and, however unlikely it triggers a large increase in case loads, then they will get blamed.

By keeping the current restrictions in place, they can hopefully maintain a case load in 2-20 a day range, dependent on clusters and get the kids back in on time, as planned.

Further easing could then happen 2-3 weeks after to make sure the impact of school openings can be isolated and understood.

After that they can concentrate on getting the country open properly so that we can all get tanked up on away days.

Erm no, because last time I checked the SG was supposed to be basing its policy decisions on 'The Science' alone and according to its four phase protocol. If it is okay for several hundred snot-nosed weans and adult staff to congregate indoors over 35 hours per week then it's clearly okay to remove the other restrictions in Phase 4.

Schools should have been one of the first sectors to close and therefore the last to be opened by any sensible understanding of risk. It is precisely this political pandering to parents who wanted the state to keep giving them unpaid childcare within them for as long as possible that helped to get us into this mess in the first place.

No new deaths today, which means none in the last week. Great news.

Only 1 death in the previous 15 days perhaps highlights how out of touch with reality the "OMG Craaaaaaazy" comments on facebook about someone daring to plan for potentially holding an event more than five months away are.

Echoes in some of the comments here of that Labour MSP (in keeping with most of Scottish Labour I cant recall their name) who wailed that the SNP were trying to improve Scotland just to make England look worse.

Pathetic.
