Think it was called on this very thread around a year or so ago that because Hancock is such a fucking idiot, he couldn't tell how plainly obvious it was that he was being set up for a fall so that if (when) everything did come out in the wash, it would be he and he alone left to be take the full derry.

And now here we are! Took less then two years which to be fair was longer than I anticipated.

Extremely pleasing seeing these scumbags finally shown up for what they always were. The Scottish Government will have been equally snakey for purely political purposes.

I also wonder what messages sent by members of SAGE and Diet SAGE would reveal - purveyors of The Science™.

Studies so far seem to be contradictory or inconclusive which surprises me, it can't be that hard to set up a physical experiment to determine it.

🥴

Ah, yes: what we truly need is more experimental data. Let's just discount the mountain of *real-world data* that exists instead. You know, what actually happens in reality and not under experimental or laboratory conditions seeking desired or idealist outcomes. Even Yer Da types on social media have made videos of what happens upon exhalation, regardless of if a person is wearing one mask or ten. This is as equally worthless as The Science™ experiments in the lab, again because we happen to have, err... a complete wealth of what happens *in the real world*.

Aye exactly, the Japanese have been at near 100% compliance the whole entire time, has it made the blindest bit of difference?

East Asia of course being famous for respiratory viruses simply not existing or never circulating in that part of the world. 🤪

Yes. Japan’s Covid death rate, just one-twelfth of that in the United States, is the lowest among the world’s wealthiest nations. With the world’s third-largest economy and 11th-largest populace, Japan also tops global rankings in vaccination and has consistently had one of the globe’s lowest infection rates. Studies have shown that the peer pressure to be masked in Japan, existing prior to COVID, significantly reduces the spread of respiratory viruses in the tightly packed nation. It’s, as @welshbairn notes, about the reduction of spread by the mask generally containing infected individuals respiratory excretions.

Japan's death rate definitely has nothing to do with them having the lowest obesity rates in the world, or wider cultural aspects that go far beyond a piece of cloth. Obviously! 🥴

Again, respiratory viruses just don't circulate in East Asia. 🤪

Over the past six months:

Since England's 'freedom day', branded a 'reckless, unethical experiment' that would endanger the world by scientists:

One place doesn't wear masks at all. The other places continue to wear masks like it is a religion, never seeing the faces of other human beings despite it no longer even being mandated. That gold standard, real-world data sure makes it conclusive just how well masks work. 🤪

Also recall the WHO advised at the start of the pandemic that masks did little or nothing to prevent the spread, before later doing a U-turn after coming under 'political pressure' to do so.

A bit like how countries around the world jettisoned their entire pre-pandemic playbooks to follow the example of an authoritarian regime. As we continue to see now, authoritarian regimes bring so much stability to the world...

Of course, Sweden were the bad guys for sticking to their guns and not following the crowd, obviously.

It really is even harder to comprehend here and now than it was at the time that such insane nonsense actually took place.

More or less confirmed by the Cochrane Report.

It was all politics, but very bad politics in as much as economies were trashed, education for young people was ruined, personal freedoms were removed, life expectancy was reduced, authoritarianism took hold (see Matt Hancock) and what for?

A great big nothing.

Quote

Matt Hancock told aides he wanted to “frighten the pants off everyone” to ensure compliance with Covid-19 restrictions, according to the latest batch of leaked messages which reveal discussions over when to “deploy” details of a new strain.

The WhatsApp exchanges suggest the then health secretary and others discussed how to use an announcement about the Kent variant of the virus to scare the public into changing their behaviour.Hancock’s’s adviser said: “Rather than doing too much forward signalling, we can roll pitch with the new strain.”

“We frighten the pants of everyone with the new strain,” the then health secretary responded.

“But the complication with that Brexit is taking the top line,” he said, in an apparent reference to media coverage of the UK’s EU exit.

“Yep that’s what will get proper behaviour change,” the adviser said.

“When do we deploy the new variant,” Hancock said.

A totally normal, non-politically driven, Following the Science approach to curtailing people's everyday liberties.

The likelihood is that variants of this discourse will have been ten a penny at governmental level across the UK and most other countries too. The plebs are there to be manipulated by fear and bullshit messaging.

These messages shouldn't really be surprising, but it's still pretty shocking to see it laid out bluntly in black & white. It was obvious from the countless examples of politicians ignoring their own rules and guidance that they didn't believe the threat was anywhere near the level they preached about daily from their podiums.

It's almost as if pandemic policy was designed not by medical experts but by behavioural scientists.

These leaks are an absolute disaster for those that very vocally shut people down who pointed out that the restrictions were abitrary and not very scientific. "What are your qualifications?!" I seem to remember being a favourite retort.

The scary thing is, as contemptible and risible as the Conservatives were, Labour and the SNP didn't think they went far enough.

It can never be allowed to happen again.

Without wishing to drift towards conspiracy theory's here, if they knew it wasn't as bad as they were making out, why go to all that bother? what was to be gained by having lockdowns etc? I get that in the first part of 2020 people were scared and demanding that their governments did something about it but they seemed to have backed themselves into a corner with no way out
