Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Probably one we don’t have vaccines and treatments for.  Think Covid 18 months ago and you’ll get the idea.

There's plenty of viruses that you should keek your breeks at, regardless of vaccines and treatments.

Hospitality has been set up as the next easy victim when the magic masks don't curtail cases and we keep finding variant cases. Everyone must wear masks when going for a piss and the vaccine passport will be introduced too, no doubt. Or maybe they'll just skip that step and shut it again with very specific furlough brought in, who knows.

In the meantime, the booster age will be lowered further, whilst they're warning people about immunity being evaded (slow clap for this messaging here, lads).

Any word on when the PCR tests will start being needed? I’m abroad at the moment, due back tomorrow night, passenger locator form already completed and day 2 lateral flow already organised.

Pretty sure you'll be OK, Johnson said the details will be announce tomorrow and they have to give notice. If your PLF has been accepted that's job done I think.

Fingers crossed! Definitely put a wave of extra stress on a quick weekend away.

Can I ask what sort of highly transimissable virus would have you keeking your breeks?

I feel sorry for the travel industry tbh. How can they (or anyone) book or plan anything if, at the drop of a hat, countries can just be added to a list that didn't exist anymore?

Confidence will again be dented in the entire industry, only this time there will be no government support to support them.

I'm fairly certain that it will revert back to normal again fairly quickly (and by that I mean the LFT flavour), but the damage will already have been done.

I saw another 4 countries were redded as well at the drop of a hat. I get the countries concerned are "no-one visits them" territory, but it's a serious measure that passes without any fanfare.

And yes, they are potentially utterly fucked here again. No furlough and if the restrictions on them increase, they will start to struggle.

John Bell (one of the creators of the Oxford vaccine who has been a great contrast with the independent sage nutters throughout ) on channel 4 there saying the early indications from South Africa are that this variant may be more transmisible but significantly less likely to cause severe illness.

He also said it was very unlikely to cause major problems.

You'll be fine, nothing in motion yet. Scottish Health Secretary:

Following discussions today with Health Secretary Sajid Javid and the other devolved administrations - and in light of the well known practical reasons for preferring a UK wide approach to travel restrictions - we are aligning with the new border restrictions being introduced by the UK Government which will require fully vaccinated arrivals to take a PCR test within two days of arrival and to self-isolate until a negative result is received. These measures will be introduced as soon as possible and kept under constant review.

In all honesty, my fears over covid disappeared when it became apparent by sometime in April that claims of 500,000 deaths in the 1st wave were not going to happen. The second that deaths started levelling out from the initial exponential curve was the end of me being worried at all.

Was that when they finally locked the country down and dropped transmission rates by stopping people from interacting?

Quote

When updated data in the Imperial team’s model1 indicated that the United Kingdom’s health service would soon be overwhelmed with severe cases of COVID-19, and might face more than 500,000 deaths if the government took no action

The 500k model prediction was with no interventions, it didn't "become apparent" the government belatedly took action to avoid this.

I really haven't been able to get my head around the panic in huge swathes of the population since then. It seems that a lot of people love a bit of drama in their lives.

This time last year the vaccines were not yet deployed and we had no specific therapeutics either. By then the UK had had 60k deaths from covid. By February 2021 that had doubled to 120k. And you think that from spring 2020 the only people who were worried were folk that "loved a bit of drama?"

This is vainglorious attention seeking contrarianism at its worst. Abject. Beneath contempt, and so effortlessly easy to contradict.

Or "bollocks" if you're more comfortable with layman's or muggle terms.
