A Long Read about the current disaster in India. The part about the government announcing a lockdown with 4 hours notice and huge numbers of migrant workers with no income having to walk hundreds of miles back to their villages with large numbers of them dying en route is devastating.

Read that article this morning. Harrowing stuff.

Absolutely agree with this. I think most normal people are now just quietly going about meeting family and friends whenever and wherever they like. I know I am but definately we need to open the wider economy now because for the last year we've been existing not living. Get us back to the football, gigs, and whatever else people like to do for fun. We can't live like this indefinately because "we just don't know!!!"

Re your first point - I was in the town yesterday for a scran and was also dragged round the shops, but there was a tangible feeling that, despite the ongoing theatre of mask wearing and hand hygiene etc, people really just don't give a f**k any more and want to move on with their lives. No distancing or shrieking out of the way, etc.

This is how pandemics end - socially as well as epidemiologically. Last summer or even before Christmas, there wasn't that same feeling. Princes Street was also the busiest I've seen it since before this whole shit show, but obviously won't be as it was until the tourists return.

We're at the point now where it's simply the Scottish and UK Governments, and assorted loser politicians, who are dragging this out for the sake of the curtain twitchers and Lovejoy types.

If you actually look at the Indian situation on an infection basis it is not that bad.  The 7 day infection rate is about 188 per 100K.

In Europe currently about 15 countries running higher infection rates than that.

What it does show is any "3rd world" (Hate that description) country with even a fairly high infection rate can end up in a nightmare situation because of healthcare issues.

To have got 16 months into the pandemic without this happening on the sub continent or Africa until now is frankly astonishing.

Get that Vaccine into these places before it kicks of in the next one.

Another reason why 'vaccine passports' are a fucking dreadful idea that should never happen:

It won't be forgotten if the Scottish Government further marginalises these groups from society.

The numbers from India don't reflect the dire reality of the situation at all by all accounts.

I did raise a wry smike at Van Tam saying it was very safe for two vaccinated people to meet each other indoors. Good news, clearly, but begs a key question: why isn't it allowed, then?

Because young people have made huge sacrifices despite not being at risk and placing them under tougher restrictions than older cohorts who have been vaccinated would be obscene.

Away around the pals for a BBQ tonight. If the weather isn’t good we’ll be under the Gazebo with a takeaway and a few cans, despite all of us having at least one dose his wife is being fairly cautious still. Doesn’t bother me too much.

Tomorrow my pals coming around for the football and a few pints from the Sub. Then away into town for a beer garden regardless of the weather.

Got a break away booked for next weekend.

Fairly happy.
Travelling to London is still up in the air for the Euros, we’ve a debate about if we go or not as half can’t be bothered if there’s restrictions still in force.

We’re no far away now troops.

The social lockdown is absolutely binned by 90% of the population and has been for a couple of months at least. The economic restrictions are just a pointless waste of time and just seem dogmatic to me.

The need to cling onto a few cases in Moray is depressing (unless the MP is held personally responsible and jailed), no doubt when we get a flare up of any sorts the clamour to get things shut down in town X will start again.

The link between cases and hospitalisation and death has been broken so let's speed up getting back to normal please.

I'm swithering on my commitment to go to London for the Euros with the boys. As much for personal reasons as for concerns that lingering restrictions may put a dampener on the trip though.

Looks that way wherever I've been. The mood of people, to my eye at least, seems to be a return to "normal" due to lockdown fatigue. People have had enough now and restrictions are no longer effective as they can't and won't be adhered to indefinitely. The restrictions initially were mostly well respected, but now other than a lot of businesses being closed or restricted, life has been reset mainly as people in general have migrated back to their lives regardless.

This. Yesterday's figures had 75 people in hospital with COVID across the whole of Scotland. Virtually all the vulnerable groups have been jagged, so get these restrictions fired into the fucking sun.

Yep, people are still getting Covid, but hospital numbers are declining, almost daily.  There's a clear lack of a link between the two things now.

See I'm in the same ballpark as you.

I'm more than happy to do things, go out for meals, see pals etc but the thought of organising something as significant as a trip to London makes me swither a bit because the worst case scenario would be getting there and there still being restrictions of any sort everywhere.

Same reason I'm not shelling out thousands to book Florida until I know for a fact there's no more facemasks in parks, limited park capacity, lack of fast passes etc. and no real prospect of any of this shit returning. I've done it properly in the past and there's no way I'll pay the same money for a watered down experience.

Very similar pal. I went on holiday last summer at the last minute as we didn't think we were getting away anywhere and then restrictions were eased enough for us to go not too far away. It was nice enough, but with most things being closed it was a bit dull and the kids missed out on things. It ended up just being more of a week off work / school / away from home than a holiday.
