Coronavirus (COVID-19)

More utter nonsense from you. I don’t know if you’re trying to play some sort of character on here these days as you’re bored in real life but it’s bizarre stuff.
I see in the news report they say “it is thought it could evade vaccines in the same way as the South African variant”. I look forward to the vaccines blowing ring after ring of cigar smoke in this variant’s face like they’ve done so far with all others.
Realm of diminishing returns for Ad Lib now. The same gag is never as funny again.

The reaction to the news is different this time.

A month or so ago the majority of reactions would have been fear. From what I've seen of this one the majority are "ok, cool, whatever" type responses.

It's almost certainly a non-event, and people know this.

Doesn’t make any sense.  If you’ve been in a red list country in the last 10 days you’re supposed to go into managed quarantine.  The SG page doesn’t mention the timeline but you have to assume they’ve lied on entry if they’ve completed this in one journey and not stayed in Paris for 10 days.

If so then the book should be thrown at them.  Is it 10 years they can get?

Looks like they've followed the rules.  I think.

Well would you look at that: a new variant that’s more transmissible and that’s more resistant to the vaccines and it’s made its way into the UK despite international travel restrictions. Almost as though we need more and longer lockdowns to get the community cases down to the low teens for all of Scotland so we can track and trace these things.

Quite sad when someone who is allegedly intelligent, must be so bored with their life they take to trolling an Internet message board. You're circling the toilet bowl with the likes of PerthshireBell now. Sad, incredibly sad

Devi and JL would have been weeping at the figures showing how successful the vaccine has been, I'm sure their Sunday has been made with a new VaRiAnT being discovered. Bets on Devi being on GMB tomorrow greeting about it

They really do live in your head rent free, don’t they. They must be getting lonely in there right enough.

Thing is means they entered the UK over 2 weeks ago, which in turn means unless we’ve seen an explosion of cases in these areas it suggests the quarantine worked and the measures including vaccines have prevented an upsurge in cases or hospitalisations that we’d no doubt have seen by now. Everyone needs to stop panicking.

Takes time for sequencing I guess.

My main take away is how they were slow to release info on cases early on on the grounds of patient confidentiality, surely there aren't that many people (think I read one family?) who have returned from Brazil to Aberdeen in the middle of February?

The manaus variant iirc was only slightly more resistant to the vaccine. One thing about it was that it was considered to avoid natural immunity. Manaus had ~70% infected in their first wave (figure not exact but was still a hell of a lot) and the new variant that arose quite easily re-infected those who had already had the initial strain ie prior disease was not a guarantee of immunity)

This is controllable with a little effort even if it does spread further than the < a handful of cases extant atm. The vaccines, while not as good at bodying this variant as the others, are effective towards it.

What won't work is sticking our fingers in our ears and going lalalalala fear porn dEVi sRIdHar etc.

There's no reason to believe this will become an issue, but it is exactly the type of scenario that scientists etc have been warning about that has been being dismissed as hyperbolic hysteria.

And of course its exactly why scientists are holding off on the Cubans, and working on new vaccines and tweaks.
