Telegraph front page saying there are loads of Covid outbreaks in English care homes, and the UK government defend themselves by complaining it takes too long to vaccinate care homes. Ten hours to do about 100 in a home when they could be doing 1000 in that time elsewhere - hopefully, Scotland will start to see some of those gains coming through in the vaccinated numbers very shortly.

It also has the claim that they’re going to start punting untested patients into care homes again. Surely not.

Nafeez Ahmed reports on startling testimony that appears to contradict previous Government denials that it is following a discredited COVID-19 policy

'A senior official at Public Health England (PHE) has revealed that the UK Government is resigned to the same ‘herd immunity’ strategy outlined by the ‘Great Barrington Declaration’, in startling testimony before a parliamentary inquiry on Wednesday, despite its previous rejection of this strategy.

Speaking before the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee, Dr Mary Ramsay, Head of Immunisation at Public Health England, said that the UK will need to “allow the disease to circulate in younger people where it’s not causing much harm” while protecting “the people who are really vulnerable”, if the vaccine fails to sufficiently slow or prevent transmission of COVID-19. She also suggested that it may not be feasible to vaccinate the entire UK population, contrary to assurances earlier this week from Health Secretary Matt Hancock.

Dr Ramsay did not refer to the Great Barrington Declaration directly, but clinical epidemiologist Dr Deepti Gurdasani of Queen Mary University described the PHE strategy as “frankly ridiculous,” and “no different from the focused protection strategy outlined in the Great Barrington Declaration, which has been thoroughly debunked as an ideology not grounded in any scientific evidence.” 

Dr Ramsay’s comments came after she was asked whether the UK Government planned to vaccinate some 60 to 70% of the UK population, or would settle for certain categories of the population being “asymptomatic” and therefore not needing vaccination. 

“I think it’s very likely that the vaccine may have some effect on transmission – it may not be complete. That may allow us to relax in a more gradual way,” she said. But she went on to explain that she saw no guarantee that the UK Government’s vaccination programme would be sufficient to prevent a further cycle of lockdowns: 

“I don’t think we’ll be able to say we can definitely stop all of those measures until we know whether the vaccine prevents transmission, and what level of immunity you get in different groups of the population, different age groups, and how long immunity lasts,” Dr Ramsay told the committee. “Because obviously if it protects against transmission only for a few months then clearly we would have to reinstate measures at a later time or go back and boost everyone.”

Saw it at the weekend and aye, they are doing it again to try and relieve pressure.

They were trying to see if they could use a network of 'hot' care homes where they already had an outbreak or could find empty ones.

It's lazy as f**k reporting I agree, but the article seems to want to define Herd Immunity as letting as many people catch it as possible and just accepting the deaths, with some vaccination to help, rather than the (previously) more recognised meaning ie vaccinate like f**k to acquire Herd Immunity.

Wee Senga at till 8 asking to scan the barcode on that along with your Clubcard, no beep no food then you're thrown out the nearest shop window like Axel Foley at Victor Maitland's office.

In ordinary times influencers posting from Dubai go out of their way to show you what a good time they are having. In Covid’s latest cruel reversal, they are now doing everything they can to show that they are working their socks off.

With a rising number of cases leading the UK to announce that the United Arab Emirates would be removed from its travel corridor list from Tuesday, British nationals returning home now face 10 days in isolation.

And in the aftermath of that announcement by the UK transport secretary, Grant Shapps, social media users have realised that an extraordinary number of the former stars of the TV series Love Island and Geordie Shore appear to be, at present, in the UAE.

Some of these exiled influencers are posting the same sunloungers-and-posh-dinners content as before – Dubai is not subject to lockdown measures like the UK. But now they are having to scramble to delete the hostile messages ensuing from their followers.

With “essential work trips” being one of very few consistently allowed justifications for travel as the UK’s rules have fluctuated over the last few months, some of the influencers in Dubai are trying to indicate that their 3,400-mile trip was a necessary part of their work – appearing in videos and paid-for endorsements.

As reaction built up on Wednesday, the Love Island star Anton Danyluk, who has been in Dubai since 10 December and has posted images of himself out for meals and smoking shisha in a pool, showed a video of his laptop with a view of the skyline behind it and the caption “love my office view”.
