Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Recommended Posts

Not a silver bullet if you want a zero covid world maybe. Most definitely a silver bullet for returning peoples lives to how they were before and treating covid as barely different to the flu.
Not sure you can say that its safe for anyone. The flu is different from SARS isnt it?

On the vaccines, yeah it's great we're third in the world behind Israel & Bahrain in how many we've vaccinated so far, but we were the first country in the world to start vaccinations. And obviously the important bit is getting all those vulnerable to serious ill-health and death vaccinated, but it's pretty sobering to hear vaccinating the full adult population of the UK will take two years to complete, if we are vaccinating 1 million a week. 6 years at the current rate. 😲

Well given the no doubt millions of people who have had it in the UK alone, a huge number of whom have been asymptomatic which is the crux of the difficulty in tackling it, I think you can say it's safe for the majority of people to catch covid, just like it's safe for the majority of people to catch flu. Horrible, yeah. Worthy of telling people they are not allowed to socialise in person with other humans? Maybe not for me tbh.

the overriding question should be 'How do we best resolve the public health problem of a disease outbreak'? rather than 'How do we ensure our measures are fair for our politically important interest groups?' It is this triangulating nonsense - being carried out by piss-poor political leaders - that explains why the UK has made roaring c**t of it time and time again this year, with no end in sight to its clown running across a minefield display.

Go ask your boss tomorrow for annual leave up to 18 January and come back and tell us how it goes. More so when he gets that request times x number of employees with kids.

With 21 days notice given to the employer, yes, you can request parental leave. It is not a guarantee that you will get it.

Your employer does not have to agree to furlough you.

An employer can deny annual leave.

You cannot take indefinite unpaid leave, you can ask for it, the employer must consider it, but does not have to grant it.

Swing and a miss, champ, thanks for playing, come back when you’re living in the real world.

You also have to be fair to those who don’t have kids, other people may need leave as well, not just the parents and annual leave only goes so far - this could go well beyond January.

As an example, I’m in a team of 6 and 3 of them have kids. Two are single parents and one is married to a key worker so the chances are high they’d all need time off. We’d have normally two off at a time so not only can all those who need holidays for childcare not get off but nor could anyone else. There would be no allowance for sickness absence which would be ridiculous management in the midst of a pandemic.

You haven’t thought this through at all, it’s a terrible idea.

What's telling about this is that if the SG had gone ahead with its blended learning model then you'd already have been facing this dilemma since August all the way through until now. The problem then is not 'my idea' - which oh btw seems to be coming down the chute going by Johnson's non-committal answer this evening - it is the fact that your team is not fit for purpose when it comes to addressing childcare needs. Either temporary cover is needed to cover this eventuality or you will simply have to run a skeleton service or none at all. The schools were off for three months earlier this year and get a further ten weeks off every so quite why you (collectively) didn't see this problem arising is a mystery.

Turns out that 'view from the ivory tower' - such is the benefit of an elevated viewpoint - in fact provided a fortnight's advance notice of the UK governments' inevitable concession today. You can in fact close schools in the middle of a pandemic and oblige parents/businesses to make it work.

Welcome to life in the real world guys!

Yes it is sobering and of course we should get carried away but the vaccine is more then 90% effective and there are single shot vaccines coming on stream shortly which immediately halves you time scales. these are worst case projections and of course important to know that it won't be don't by February but 900,000 vaccinations by the end of Jan for a country like Scotland would be an incredible achievement.

Dont disagree but passing it on is the thing that bothers me. Plus I've seen a family member have their life destroyed due to a lung disease so I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

Neither would I. I wouldnt wish death of flu on anyone, but I also wouldnt expect to be told to put my life on indefinite hold to prevent it.

For me April all outdoor settings re open face coverings in thoroughfares and hand sanitiser upon entry and exit with the app still being promoted from May indoor settings with 2m distancing reducing to 1m in the 3rd week of May and then early June take a look and see how hospitalisations and public compliance with self isolation are going if hospitalisations are really low and people if they are positive or close contact are self isolating then by 20th of June hopefully it's just reminding people to wash their hands no go out if they have symptoms and we can have a fairly normal life.

Any chance of a full stop?

You were talking about people using annual or parental leave to stay off to look after kids. That’s isn’t what’s happening.

Not sure whether to post this in here or the Guitarist thread. Apparently conspiracy theorists are posting a circuit diagram for the 5G chip that's going to be in the covid vaccine (obviously) but its actually for the Boss Metal Zone distortion pedal...

I'm a total mosher and even I think that's the worst effects pedal ever so I can see why people think it's being used for something else...

Elite sport, including the Premier League, in England suspended. I assume we will do the same up here.

Do we have enough time to complete our fixtures up here, including the playoffs, before the Euros if we follow suit?

a moot question seeing as Sky got it wrong, but the fact the 19/20 cup was played in the 20/21 season would probably mean theyd finish this season before starting another one. As it should

Swinney showing his ignorance/incompetence again. Earlier he urged the SFA to look into Celtic's trip to Dubai. Celtic have responded by saying that not only did Holyrood know about the trip, they gave permission for it to go ahead as far back as 12th November

A good time to remind everyone that if everyone washed their hands properly 1 million less people would die from diarrheic disease and I would imagine it would probably be a couple of thousand world wide from the flu.

One thing I hope that remains is hand washing facilities going in and out of shops

Over a third of the population are elderly or vulnerable? Some fucking country we live in.

43% of Scots are classified as disabled or chronically ill

Quote

Since the 1950′s, Scottish life expectancy has improved more slowly than in other comparably wealthy nations. Furthermore, 43% of adults are classified as chronically ill or disabled and, despite medical advances, all-cause mortality in younger age categories (15–44 years) remains non-declining at a rate of 142.4 deaths per 100,000 (Bromley and Shelton, 2010). In addition, current suicide rates are 50% higher than in 1968 (Whyte and Ajetunmobi, 2010), obesity is on the rise, and general levels of physical activity are diminishing (Scottish Government and Convention of Scottish Local Authorities, 2010). As a consequence of this poor health record, and mortality rates persistently higher than European averages, Scotland has been dubbed ‘the sick man of Europe’, and the phenomenon of these unexplained health disparities labelled the ‘Scottish effect’ (Bromley and Shelton, 2010, Shelton, 2009, Whyte and Ajetunmobi, 2010).

It will change eventually, don’t try to fight something that you have no control over. Apart from the obvious. What’s the point of getting upset over it now? You can’t change any decisions.

Not trying to be a dick, honestly just focus on what you can do and enjoy that.

November 12th is a long, long time ago and things have changed considerably in the past couple of weeks. So just before Christmas when the gov advised against travelling across the border, and then said "there must be no non-essential travel between Scotland and other parts of the UK.  That advice also applies to overseas travel." Did someone at Parkhead not maybe think their trip to Dubai was no longer a goer?

Using "the current rate" is completely pointless given that up until now they've relied on the more difficult to administer Pfizer vaccine, but are now just starting to roll out the mass-produced Astra Zeneca one.

It would be like me leaving the house in the morning and walking to the train station, then working out how long it would take me to get to work if I kept walking rather than getting on the train.

I don’t know why you’re quoting me, I never at any stage said you couldn’t close schools at short notice, I merely pointed out the error strewn nonsense in your post. Which hasn’t changed and is still baloney. Maybe you should check your notes again.
