Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Pagan being a lazy word used by intolerant Christians lumping all non Christian religions pre dating the spread of Christianity into one word. Nearly every religion around the world celebrated the winter solstice in their own way and when Christianity spread it became convenient to have both the solstice celebration and the birth of Jesus on the same day even though no one actually knows for sure the day when he was born. Much of what we think of as the ideal Christmas is a Victorian creation, a Dickensian Christmas card illusion that has gradually evolved into the retail opportunities, materialism and the stress monster over 150 years.
Never mind not knowing the day he was born, we don't actually know if he was ever born at all !

That's all that people want here. The ability to choose and assess your own risk.

And the responsibility and awareness to assess your risk to other people. That's where it falls down on a Saturday night, and why Sweden are making pubs and restaurants close early and telling people to avoid shops and public transport.

Its okay though...infection rate in schools have only risen by 675% since August, so closing gyms, shops, keeping the pubs shut, as well as restaurants,non-League football behind closed doors etc should do the trick in the next 3 weeks.

Still, when you have a populist government it's all about keeping their eyes on those polling numbers,

Meanwhile in Europe, Austria chooses to close schools...

I don't get how closing pubs, restaurants, gyms and shops will boost their polling numbers. Doesn't sound very populist to me. And considering schools were closed before August a big increase in infections since then isn't exactly surprising.

The R rate is under 1 in Lanarkshire despite schools being open.

Thats one area,,,,what about the 675% rise and the fact that in England where we have data, 40% of infections are coming from education (including obviously colleges and uni's, while 4% is from hospitality)

And how are infections in schools impacting on health care utilisation?

No, I argued it was better than the English version because we didn't outsource it. Though it doesn't matter how effective the app, or how many contacts you trace, you won't catch asymptomatic cases that way.

I know they've had trouble with the English app but in some ways it's better, automatically lets you snap the QR code when you go into a pub without faffing about.

Look its clear there isnt the political will to close the schools right now. But why the f**k are they not all wearing masks and why are they allowed to go out in massive groups at lunchtimes etc?
Is there honestly any posters who want to argue that you can’t explain to a massive majority of 13yo+ kids in high schools that they need to wear a mask?
Why do we not have mass testing?
Vaccine can’t come fucking quick enough. Anyone who even remotely agrees ‘lock down so we can have christmas dinner’ is a w****r.

I think 11th December is probably late as they dare go. "Saving Christmas" isn't about family visits or churches. It's about retail.

You're utterly deluded if you think that a two week window is going to save retail. They are monumentally fucked and will collapse like a house of cards in January.

The clear retail winner from this is Amazon's Black Friday event (smaller online stockists are available: try ABE Books for example)
