People support lockdowns because they still believe that they will 'solve the problem' and reckon it will punish other people's behaviour far more than themselves. When the reality hits that they are in it for the long haul and their own special pleading interests get binned as well they will change their tune.

Even if you were a government minister in favour of a lockdown you'd be unwise to bank on that public support IMO.

I'd be in favour of forcing those who actively want a lockdown to stay at home for a bit once this is all done. If they lost their job / had to live off of Universal Credit as a result of not being able to attend well that would be a shame.

No doubt they'd find some way of claiming that was selfish and unfair without any sense of irony at all.

That's fine and dandy, but we're not in Europe and wouldn't be able to even join with our deficit of 7 and a bit billion.

From a quick look our National debt to GDP ratio is projected be about 80%, the EU's is 79.5%, so not a problem there. Our budget deficit is projected to be 8%, the average of the Euro countries is 8.5, so not a problem there either. Covid will have changed everything of course, but likely not in a major way to the differentials.
