Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Recommended Posts

I want pubs, gyms and socialising but anyone who thinks there is a trade to be made where schools are closed and pubs and restaurants reopen is a moron.

Tbf I think VT is just taking the misanthrope position that if pubs are going to be shut then schools should be as well to spread the suffering around.

Has anyone said that in any of the 3000+ pages of this thread?

It seems to me that people think schools should have opened cautiously during a global pandemic with mask wearing, social distancing and blended learning. Just like many other countries who are not as much of a car crash as this one have done.

The irony is that the failure to do this means it is far more likely that schools will have to close completely now that the virus is out of control again.

Exactly it's about priorities. Imagine that wee Krankie prioritising education over boozing eh ? The virus is everywhere, we all know that and the SG have acknowledged that despite the mewling from the same half dozen or so on here that the SG thinks C19 stops at the school gates. They know it doesn't as much as we do but a full cross party consensus within the SG is education is a priority. But the perception amongst the hard core is that it should be blended thus magically allowing their beloved boozers to reopen. I like a pint as much as the next person but if it comes to a priority of pint or kids in school then it's surely a no brainer for the vast majority of rational thinkers.

The argument of schools and pubs is probably a more valid one given we were told if they adapted they way they operate they are safe but not the argument schools or pubs.

Literally no-one on this thread wants schools to either close or move to blended learning so pubs can be open.

As a non-parent and as someone who enjoys the occasional pint or twelve, I'd be happy with that.

The virus isn't out of control and all the evidence is pointing to it now being an endemic seasonal virus. Every country in Europe from Belarus which took no precautions through Sweden, Germany, Belgium,  France, Italy, the UK and Spain is entering a second wave. The clear lesson to take from that is that a second wave (and a third wave next winter) is inevitable without a national quarinitine like NZ.

Shutting schools might flatten the curve slightly but the reward isn't worth it. Closing schools to slightly prolong the lives of people in their 70s and 80s is a terrible exchange.

I think you'd find everyone on here would agree with this. The biggest issue is that people are questioning mixed messaging from government and inconsistency in their stated goals.

During the first wave people became aware of the real mortality and health impacts of the virus. The focus on the hospital incompetence in Bergamo and the promotion of Covid horror stories in the media had people afraid but the vast majority of people have a clear understanding of the risks now.

I think the second wave is going to see a far greater questioning of lockdown restrictions and their quantifiable benefits.

I don't think anyone is saying schools should be completely closed but why do the government seem willing to shut down full sectors of society rather than asking school kids to wear a mask? If reports are true then pretty much everything in Lanarkshire will be closed down from next week except from schools which will be allowed to carry on as normal. It doesn't make any sense.

Can you find me one of these umpteen posts where people are calling for schools to be closed or moved to blended learning so that pubs can be open?

What would / will the benefit be from that model of education, what would be the reward for having the 8% of kids living with an abusive or addicted parent moving into a blended learning model not to mention the parents who simply don't give a f**k.
Yes schools undoubtedly contribute to infections the same as any other sector but the small reduction blended learning would contribute would not give a reward great enough to merit it. Anyone who thinks sectors currently closed or restricted would be able to reopen if we moved to a blended learning model has their head firmly in the sand. The rewards for the disruption it would cause are simply not great enough.

Pupils in this kind of situation were never asked to be at home instead of at school. There were hub schools for vulnerable pupils and, in the blended model, those would continue to have existed.

Blended learning does not mean chucking every kid to their own house for 24 hours a day.

Because masks don't make any real difference unless they are high quality and used properly.

Cloth masks that most people wear only offer 3% protection. For kids if they are continually touching their masks it's probably worse than not wearing one due to contamination.

Schools and hospitals are like supermarkets and bin men they are necessary to the functioning of society.
