We're in east lothian, and while it was annoying at first being bracketed in with Edinburgh, it's obviously been done to stop a "ripple effect" being created - pubs open east lothian would mean people coming into region from Edinburgh and Midlothian, there are more than enough ample transport links for this to happen.

The front page pics of Musselburgh would make the summer beach party ones of Porty look small fry.

an olympic bar, 400kgs of plates, kettlebells and a big manila rope, and a 6 ft banana bag

The guy two doors along from me has most of that as well as a lifting bench. All of which remains outside, uncovered, in all weathers.

Putting aside who he works for, this is very good read and puts things in perspective. If only the masses agreed

Is that Kavanagh arguing for 'freedom through work' in that last paragraph? About right for a man who wrote a column in 2017 that Sean O'Grady (The Independent) said had language reminiscent of Nazi propaganda. A thoroughly odious man in Murdoch's pocket.

A willingness to use tier 4, but not tier 0 is an interesting insight into the mindset of SG.

Tier 4 maybe justifiable for N and S Lanarkshire, but what's the justification for Western isles not being in tier 0.

If WI aren't in tier 0 at the levels they currently have, then there's zero prospect of any Central Belt LAs ever even getting to Tier 1.

Just in case we're not all bored of Sweden, a comment from an actual Swede

If bars and restaurants were allowed to open here, with clear advice to limit the number of visits to them, the same thing would happen here.

The venues which have somehow clung on for years despite dwindling trade and no atmosphere would be in trouble, but the popular, well run places which cater for what people actually want in 2020 would plod on just fine.

With strict orders to restrict numbers and enforce social distancing, and be closed down if they don't, like in Sweden? Yeah, probably.

While I take the general point, the Western Isles probably isn't the best example with the South Uist outbreak being so recent. Obviously the case rate overall through the council area is still extremely low so perhaps you could just have the region overall at 0 with the council having the power to place greater restrictions on the Uists. You want to avoid tiers within tiers but for a local authority covering such a wide area it would make sense.

For all the fuss being made about East Lothian, Inverclyde has an even lower case rate. No doubt we'll be launched into Tier 3 due to proximity to Glasgow while areas with higher rates like Dumfries and Galloway are in Tier 2.

Indeed.

If proximity is a factor, then there's really little point in abiding by the rules in places like Falkirk, Inverclyde, East Lothian etc if the numbers in places next door determines the tier they're in

It’ll be the same if Dundee and Angus end up in different tiers. The only indication that you’ve left Dundee and arrived in Monifieth is that the next bus stop looks different.

It’s a similar problem in the other direction where Invergowrie is by all intents and purposes a suburb of Dundee, but is in Perth & Kinross.

There’s obviously no easy solution, though. As soon as you try and make restrictions more specific than “whatever is says on your council tax bill” (e.g. postcode area) it creates confusion.
