1) Chairman Mao didn't mention the per 100,000  bit in his post. He just said "ever".

2) When did Sweden reach a population of 100,000? Sometime during the Viking age maybe because one theory of the Vikings going raiding was a lack of land

Now clever buggers the old Norse Spam worshippers may have been but I doubt they kept meticulous statistics on deaths per 100,000 per month back in 793.

Actually having googled it, it is reckoned by a Swedish historian the population was between 800k and 1 m between 800 and 1000 AD

So Sebastian Rushworth MD can't empirically prove his claim because the statistics aren't available.

There's quite a good programme on Radio 4 called "More or less" that deals with stats and numbers. Worth a listen.

Things like this are just silly. Whether you agree with them or not, the restrictions that are in place at the time should apply.

Anything else would just make the restrictions look even more arbitrary as, if they could be relaxed for one particular day, there would be no logical argument against relaxing them for any other.

Agreed. They are shit, but when you do that, you've opened the floodgates. What about Hogmanay/New Year's Day/Burns Night etc.

It would also provide a large stick for the population to be beaten with. "Well, we let you have Christmas and you did x and y and look at all these cases that have resulted! four week circuit breaker for having too much fun".

If restrictions are lifted by January, can we re-impose them for one night on Burns night?

It's cute that you think our very own NHS had no protocols in place to deny treatment to our elderly, frail and otherwise unlikely to survive people.

Offensive and categorically untrue.

The "Resuscitation Decision Guidance Covid 19" chart I'm looking at must be fake then...

If a patient is frail and unlikely to survive, why would you subject them to the trauma and indignity of CPR?

Well it also includes intubation etc.

I only said it was a protocol that was in place. Thanks for comfirming it is true. Quite the U-turn

Btw I don't understand why you are so defensive here. I don't think anyone would be surprised to know that the NHS would deem certain treatments unsuitable for groups of people. Whether that be Covid related, or anything else.

But it's not a fair stick to beat another country's health system response with, or use it as an example of a failing, when very similar procedures were in place here.

Yes

Then you will understand that if your physiology has deteriorated for whatever reason, to the point that your heart stops, you are dead.

If there is no treatment that can reverse the underlying cause for deterioration, then CPR will not be effective.

CPR is an invasive and undignified act. If it is not going to be successful, under any circumstances, why would you want it?
