Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Recommended Posts

Heard on the radio that instead of furlough, in the US they've just been firing everyone $600 a week because most state's computer systems are so old they couldn't handle working out a percentage of people's salary. So that's resulted in some people's covid payments being more than their job was paying them. Great stuff.
Don't know if it varies state to state but folk I know in America are getting $1000 UBI not nearly enough but if you had told me America under trump would be the first country to try UBI I wouldn't have believed you.
Not sure where this has came from - the USA didn't have any sort of Furlough scheme (and in the good old "government help = socialism = communism = evil", a great many people said they shouldn't ever have one) which led to the mass unemployment we saw as the virus spread. The Trump administration did give a $1200 check (sic) to taxpayers (with a $75,000 salary limit, after which the amount they got came down) but most of the stimulus package was sent to corporations rather than individuals. So it wasn't a furlough scheme, it wasn't UBI (around 6.5% of Americans didn't receive it) and the stuff about the states computers is a load of nonsense (the $600 figure probably refers to an increase of that amount of the Unemployment Insurance that people would be getting if they'd lost their jobs as a result of Covid-19 and is a short term scheme as part of the CARES Act).

Well the 7th, 8th and 9th words of my post were literally "instead of furlough".

Had to go round a few shops at lunchtime, and noticed several instances of punters - invariably older - wearing masks, but round their chins.

Fair play to them for at least trying, but in terms of protection it's up there with tying a johnny round the base of your cock and a couple of months later wondering how she got pregnant.

Good to see the contrarians applauding the fact that there are no deaths again. Oh, wait....

The fact that what the Scottish Government is doing seems to be working is the trigger to complain about what the Scottish Government is doing. Again.

I see the First Minister mentioned the quite sensible desire to avoid an autumn/winter covid-19/normal flu double whammy.

I heard Luke O'Neill mentioning this study earlier so looked it up. It seems covid restrictions have all but wiped out the southern flu season this year. Can't help but think this is a message that should be hammered home in the north with autumn approaching and clear evidence that the flu season can be eliminated. Seems a good idea this year.

I literally just googled "resistance training at home" and got umpteen results back with suitable resistance training that you can do at home. I concede it's not ideal and not your normal work-out, but I just can't accept that training at home or outside doesn't give you mental health benefits and it MUST be done in a gym.

That said, I fail to see why gyms can't be operating a limited number of people with cleaning sessions in between work-outs right now.

I should have been clearer. Resistance training aimed more at strength and muscle growth. These require gym equipment, such as a bench, squat rack, olympic barbells, etc. I mix up training between hypertophy and strength training, it would cost far too much for me to get the same benefits at home.

Also the mental health benifits gained from muscle growth in my own personal case are huge. Gives me a greater sense of well being. My endorphins are raised much more from a workout at the gym than a jog around the park

I genuinely mean no offence here and I'm just floating this as a thought, but is it healthy to tie your sense of well-being to the physical appearance of your muscles? Do you make the same judgment of others?

No not one bit . I went to college and got my Personal trainer qualification, then turned to heroin and other opiates for a number of years. For me I am at my happiest when working out, and it benefits me emotionally and physically and helps keep me clean so it is 100% a personal feeling of mine. I couldn't care less if something is rake thin or obese.

I saw some personal trainer type with a client down the park one afternoon last week. he'd taken a load of kettlebells and was making her lift them while standing a few yards back. if she can do that outdoors, and weights can be purchased from online retailers, then I don't see why gyms are necessary.

Thanks. As someone who just regards their body as something to move them around it's genuinely interesting to hear how it is for others.

It’s great news that there’s been no deaths for nearly two weeks but you appear to be suffering from a huge case of wildly missing the point, or you’re intentionally missing it.

The goal isn’t just to minimise Covid deaths, it’s to minimise all deaths while also ensuring people’s mental and physical health isn’t shot to f**k. Being shit scared to make any change to the rules while there’s as little as 300 active cases and no deaths in 12 days isn’t for everyone. The damage to other aspects of life and knock on health effects can’t just be ignored.

The ones who have it just under their nose are the ones that annoy me - if you are going to wear a mask at least wear it fucking properly.

4 new cases, 0 deaths (12th day in a row)

Hopefully this will continue with low figures, bit concerned with increase in Europe at the moment.

If Europe looks like it’ll be experiencing a 2nd spike it makes sense to close the air bridges and extend furlough for the travel industry until the year end.

Will they do it? I doubt it.
