It’s main aim wasn’t to prevent deaths though. We can go around in circles here but they didn’t have a lockdown to prevent deaths, it was because the situation in Italy of hospitals being overloaded and they panicked. I honestly don’t think there was any chance of the NHS being overwhelmed here anyway

And we didn’t want the NHS to be overwhelmed because...it would lead to more deaths.

Good to know you don’t think there was any chance of the NHS being overwhelmed. Hope you’ve offered your services to NHS Scotland as a public health specialist?

I don't think it is an intentional overstatement of deaths.
I think it's a measurement of elderly people who tested positive for covid-19 months ago, recovered, and have since died of natural causes.
There is currently no cut-off date between testing positve for covid and dying that would differentiate between the two.
I thought they announced a week or two back they had rectified that issue and it was now death within 28days of a positive test ?

I've got KLM flights booked from Inverness in October and December, vouchers available if I cancel for any reason and you get a year to rebook for flights that can be the year after.

Cool man. Sounds no bad then. I'm just no sure about 2nd waves and travel restrictions by then so don't want to get my hopes up.

I'm making sure to book accommodation I can cancel too, worth paying a few quid extra imo.

Quite a few showing their disgusting golfophobia on here.

The last acceptable form of bigotry smh.

I was at a national conference for my union after a recent equalities act had been passed where some gammon stood up to make the point that golfers weren't a protected characteristic.

There are bellends out there fighti g for golfers rights.

Still reasonable in a tent.

Just booked a hotel in Ullapool for £49 a night. Loads of places mothballing and a lots of ones that are open are taking the pish pricewise, but they do that every summer. If you look around a bit and are flexible about dates you can find ok deals for rentals and rooms.

There was every chance it would have been overwhelmed, and having spoken to someone who was working down in NHS London at the peak, in some places it appears it came closer that you'll hear admitted officially. While the Nightingale never went above a couple of percent of capacity down there, that seems to have been more down to the powers that be making the decision to have "normal" hospitals run at meltdown level for several weeks rather than attract the negative public perception of transferring more patients to what effectively was a giant docklands death hangar staffed in large part by people who had no recent ICU experience.

Scotland exceeded ‘normal’ ICU capacity in early April, by upto around 50% at the peak. Only extra ICU beds stopped people dying in corridors, especially in Glasgow. These can’t be magicked up on the spot - it took many crucial services being stopped altogether, extra staff thrown into unfamiliar areas and a lot of money.

There seems to be a desire to rewrite history now the worst is over and things are pretty settled at the moment. Without the advance warning we had there is absolutely no question Scotland and indeed the rest of the UK would’ve been just like Lombardy. Even with a few weeks notice we very nearly blew it.

'Just like Lombardy' in what way? I fail to see how 'chucking people back into old folks' homes to spread it around there before dying' achieved a better outcome in the UK by any measure other than not giving the government some nasty TV pictures to account for.

And everyone buying the 'protect the NHS' narrative seems to be forgetting all the excess deaths brought about by other acute diseases (strokes, heart attacks, sepsis etc.) that were not treated because people were too shit-scared to go to an A and E department in the spring. Which is why A and E admissions plunged and have been lower than usual for months. Not to mention the countless chronic illnesses, cancers etc. that will have been made worse/rendered terminal by the NHS essentially turning into a Covid fighting force and focusing on very little else over the past five months. And then we've got the long-term impact on public health of an economic shock and waves of unemployment that will have been significantly exacerbated by locking the country down for months on end.

Lockdown will cost many lives as well as saving others and the substantial downsides of this policy need to be accounted for as well. Blithely waving it through as The Only Solution does not leave us any better equipped to deal with another outbreak or a future pandemic.

A wee stroll through the Silverburn shopping centre and I only saw two people other than kids without masks. Not surprisingly, both were fat guys with shaved heads and the usual menacing "f**k you" look on their puffy faces. Ironically, the two wee kids of one of them did have masks on.

My nieces have been wearing them too. The older one chose to because she thought it was unfair that grown-ups had to and she didn't, while the younger one thinks it's unfair if grown-ups get to and she doesn't.

The wee one has an absolutely tremendous Spongebob mask, of which I am absolutely not jealous at all.

27 new cases out of 14,774 tests today,  a fractional percentage increase on yesterday but it seems that as testing is steadily increased, the percentage of positive tests seems to also be holding steady.  I guess that's why Sturgeon's rhetoric doesn't seem to be too panicky about it.  High concentration of new cases in and around Lanarkshire - initially I thought if a local lockdown might be being discussed but it's probably too late now.  I wonder if it's harder to implement in the central belt than it was in Dumfries and Gallowas though?

One of the downsides of my kids getting older is no more Spongebob.  I still watch the odd episode mind you.

Its great to see most people on board with masks and the different designs are excellent for kids.

I still regularly watch the first film.

What is the fucking problem with people in the UK wearing a mask? Just fucking wear it ffs, there's almost no trouble here with it and infection rates are low AF.

Honestly the British will come up with any excuse to not put a tiny bit of effort in sometimes.
