I would hope the SG are aware of, and consider, the above. Seems that Italian doctor was talking out of his arse and is backtracking. If I'd known he used to be Berlusconi's personal physician I would have been more sceptical. Disappointing. The fact that patients are arriving with a lower viral load is probably just down to social distancing and face masks. https://uk.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-who-transmission/who-and-other-experts-say-no-evidence-of-covid-19-losing-potency-idUKKBN23832J The original article. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-italy-virus/new-coronavirus-losing-potency-top-italian-doctor-says-idUSKBN2370OQ What is it about Italian and French doctors and crying for attention with unfounded claims? Paco
There’s a second wave going through Iran at the moment, and it’s worse than the first. Any hope that this will just go away is at best completely unfounded. We’re through the looking glass now where the same people who never thought there was a need for a lockdown are looking at the numbers and asking whether we need current restrictions for 200 dead per day, and falling. We’ll get there but it’s idiotic to rush.

Think the chances of a second wave are higher where they haven't got the numbers down, are wildly opening really quickly and aren't taking precautions when out and about. Hopefully we have it under control enough over here to deal with that. Seems to have been a bit haphazard opening the schools down south. Again hopefully we'll be a bit more organised and sensible about it, and obviously waiting till August is a good shout as long as things continue the way they are Our schools have re-opened, too, but as far as I'm aware it's (mostly) for children who need extra help. Wasn't much activity at our local primary school yesterday when I drove past it taking my wife for a doctor's appointment.

The word you are looking for is uneconomical. The costs of finding a suitable replacement for an offshore worker for eample are far higher than testing for covid whereas there is a huge pool of replacement care workers available for a modest agency fee. The opportunity cost (to the business, not society) of not having the worker present at all is way higher offshore. Neglecting vulnerable people is really quite cheap in the short term.

For businesses, yes it's uneconomical, but for the country as a whole it seems a worthwhile cost if it restores confidence and reduces transmission.

Maybe not so much in the summer. but access to emergency specialist medical care is obviously limited and non existent if the weather's bad enough.
O'Kelly Isley III
''The NHS coronavirus test-and-trace system designed to prevent a second deadly wave is not expected to work at full speed until September or October, the Guardian has learned. It comes as a leaked email from the chief executive of Serco – one of the main companies contracted to deliver the service – revealed how he doubted the scheme would evolve smoothly but said he wanted it to “cement the position of the private sector” in the NHS supply chain.'' Looks like the second wave will have to wait until we have a decent prevention system set up. That will be Rupert Soames, grandson of Churchill, brother of Nicholas and with impeccable connections to both the British Establishment and the Tory Party.A frightfully nice fellow who I met several times in his previous role, he will not flinch from taking those tough decisions, if you get my drift.

Course it is. Long, long way to go with this. In fact only a vaccine (if it ever comes), or the infamous 'herd immunity' will put this to bed.
