O'Kelly Isley III
The thing is Britain was pretty shit in WW2 up until 1944 barring the odd success in North Africa which Hitler didn't really care about anyway. Colonel Tom was part of the Dunkirk evacuation. It was miraculous we got so many bodies back over too Blighty and must have been traumatic for those on the beach. My mate's dad was there as well but volunteered to go to a company as he was still a teenager and had no depebdents, fighting the rearguard to try and stall the Germans as much as possible. (The Germans backed off in general). He was in a machine gun team and was lucky to be taken alive, as machine gunners were liable to get shot rather than taken prisoner. Spent 5 years in a POW camp on the polish/German border. These politicians spouting this jingoism are reading off the back of a Commando comic. My two grandfathers fought in WW1 and neither would wear a poppy such was their contempt for Douglas Haig. I had three uncles who saw action in WW2, with one evacuated from Dunkirk. The common link in all of them was a notable reluctance ever to discuss much about their military service. War has a habit of doing that to people. I'm pretty certain though that all of them would have abhorred this current circus.

Both returned bald, blamed it on having to wear hats and helmets.

My Grampa joined the Navy in 1936 and was involved in the Arctic & Malta (got sunk) convoys and the Pacific. Again , never went into any great detail, but he never saw themselves as better than any other generation. It he never joined out of any sense of civic duty or loyalty to the crown.... he was from the Welsh valleys and it was either the navy or a life down the mines! And my other Grampa? Well he was born in Ireland in 1916, so he never did join HM Forces... though was a security guard in the Torpedo factory.
Granny Danger
I imagine most folk who fought on the front line in wars are more Wilfred Owen than Rupert Brooke. The reality of the horrors of war will have that affect. -

Given the higher levels of asthma and allergies you millennials seem to suffer from compared to us older folk I wouldn't be so fucking smug in an epidemic of a virus that causes breathing problems...

Considering Italy was overwhelmed and couldn't even treat patients at one stage what does that say about the UK? It must be very wide spread. Italy was getting reported on as a crisis and an anomaly. We aren't overwhelmed and there has been no sense of panic on the news. Seems very odd. It was all concentrated in particular areas of the north of Italy. Most of the south had very few cases. Britain has had a much more even spread.

I guess war is one of those things where it matters less if your shit at the start so long as you finish strong. And really, the RAF and Navy were doing alright, it was just the army that took to November 1942 to get it's shit together. Marshmallo
Say what you will about the death toll and potential government failings, at least we have a free press covering the big stories and asking hard hitting questions to keep them to account. Some entities might be biased or be looking at the commercial aspect but we are all fortunate to have such a high standard of publically funded journalism as the BBC.
