Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Are companies telling their employees this?  I doubt all but the stupidest of employers are giving the exact opposite advice to their employees.

It’d be grounds to look for a new employer if they were, to my mind.

Aye. Part of me thinks that a lot of the govt measures are aimed at ensuring folk take this seriously.

If you could reliably get folk to wash their hands, minimise contact with vulnerable people etc then that would probably be as much as we could do, but folk wont do it unless they are convinced the threat is serious.

I agree with the mass gatherings thing, I think crippling every day life is too far. Of course I realise that virologists know better than me, but it just seems to me like we are on the verge of going too far

Even if it does get some folk taking it seriously, you can never underestimate the ability of people to be stupid and selfish.

Case in point would be the fucking bellend that Radio Scotland keep giving airtime to who insists "they cannae stoap me comin tae the pub"

Ironically I think we aren't going far enough. We're all going to do this and then when the restrictions are eventually lifted the virus will just work its way back in from places where it hasn't been eradicated.

So then, if it's essentially impossible to go far enough, is it better to cause massive disruption and nearly get there (but still fail), or to cause less disruption and miss by miles.

My view is literally anything which affords the NHS even just a few more weeks before the storm is worth pursuing.

I'm looking out for October holiday bargains.

I'm sacking a holiday this year. If I can avoid spending my savings and keep myself in a job, there should be a glut of houses coming on the market in the next year...

I don't follow your logic.

If the thing has died down by October then lots of folk will be desperate to get a holiday, the firms will be desperate for cash and will milk the situation by raising prices.

Or have I got it all wrong?

They can stop people going to the pub but they've chosen not to for the sake of plausible deniability when pubs go to the wall so (in a sense) he is right.

That's not very nice - Even DAFC has managed to look past my disdain of his political views as I slip into the abyss

At this time of uncertainty I believe a degree of continuity is both important and reassuring.

On that basis I will continue to be “not nice”.

We have everyone working from home who can work from home. The rest of us are business as usual, unless self isolating. Expecting to have working from home capability in place in the next few weeks, but I'm not convinced. Was meant to be in that position from last week onwards and for whatever reason it hasn't happened.

Pretty much us.  Work from home if you have the capability, those who currently don't go into the office on a rota basis until IT catch up with getting them remote access.

One thing is for sure, those companies who spent years chipping away at Business Continuity Plans to save money, are now getting bitten on the arse.

I'm looking to pick up a few flats in central Edinburgh

The AirBnB market is probably going to take an absolute hammering. Anyone who didn't put up a huge deposit and is relying on the income is probably praying for government intervention right now.

His argument wasn't in favour of supporting local business.

Neither is mine. What I suppose I am getting is they are telling people not to go to the pub but condoning the attitude of "I'll just go anyway" by keeping it legal to do so.

Ours was actually reasonable, for the most part. They have dispersed hundreds of us across various offices in the last few weeks and it has been relatively seamless. The last few will be sorted out in time, just hugely frustrating that I'm one of the ones having to wait.

I wouldn't go so far as to say they are condoning it, more that they are crediting people with a level of common sense that isn't present

They either need to commit to one or the other. "You shouldn't go to the pub but pubs will be open to the public" is ridiculous.
