However, it's very likely that thousands of older people, already sick people, people with asthma or COPD etc will die. If wearing masks, washing hands stops the spread of this and less people die, how is that a bad thing? Do you wear a mask all year round to help protect the hundreds of thousands who die yearly from the 'normal' flu?

Newbornbairn
By the way, about 600 people a year die of flu in the UK. This virus has the potential to kill tens of thousands in the UK - and there is no vaccine.

Bairnardo
Forgive my lack of knowledge, but how do people die from this? Are people literally hospitalised but theres no effective treatment and they die, or are deaths from this type of thing more like breathing difficulties in their sleep or what?

welshbairn
Hopefully like most coronaviruses this will turn out to be seasonal with it dissipating in the Spring, and having only kicked off here in February, the numbers affected could be low. And we should have a vaccine ready if it returns. Bit of positive thinking. -

ICTChris
Chief Meidcal Officer Catherine Calderwood says that it’s possible up to 200,000 people will require hospitalisation in Scotland if the COVID 19 virus becomes an epidemic. That would be on the high end of the scale, with 80% of the population catching the virus.
johnnydun
Tin foil hat time... Could this just be a man made thing to off the Iranian government? Start it in China, oh look it's moved to Iran and killed off the entire leadership. Pity the last government official died just hours before we found this cure! DiegoDiego
Washing your hands with soap and water or sanitiser/grappa frequently wouldn't be paranoid in your case.Joking aside I think now we're into the second week of serious infections in Italy people are starting to take it pretty seriously. All meetings are being moved into the largest rooms available and we're now in classic P&B windows open, heating on full.I'm glad they've kept the schools closed because that's thousands of clatty b*****ds with raging hormones wiping their greasy paws over each other then going to their grandmother's for lunch and spitting and coughing everywhere.

A quick spread through the UK in March and we could see 30,000+ 65 and over hanging up their boots for good.
