I heard late last night, and was genuinely gutted. As many have said, he was one of the very best drummers ever to play in a rock idiom, but yet wasn't your typical rock star...shy, studious and introverted almost to a fault by all accounts.

Rush started off as a Zeppelin clone band that weren't really destined to get out of the second division to be honest, but his addition prior to the second album changed things, as his playing and lyrical contributions moved things to a different level...by album #3 the long concept pieces that would define the rest of the 70s had begun, and the band became huge.

Proper huge. I can remember going to buy Permanent Waves in Glasgow's Listen Records on the day it came out, and the shop being closed for anything else....you just stood in a queue, paid over your four quid and got your copy of the album straight out the box.

I lost my way with Rush maybe around the time of Power Windows for a few years - by that point they were playing a keyboard-heavy kind of art rock that didn't grab me although I got back into them in the early 90s around the time of Roll the Bones. but by the latter years of that decade it looked to be all over when Peart suffered the loss of his wife and daughter in quick succession and understandably withdrew from public view.

When they returned there was always the sense of the band being on borrowed time....Peart had remarried and now had young children with no intentions of repeating what he saw as his mistake in previously missing out on family life, so touring was always in short concise bursts. Ironically, this late period produced some of their best music in years.

And then it was over. Peart had had shoulder problems and tendonitis for a while but had noticed a decline in his recovery time and in his playing, and had no desire to continue playing live picking up a paycheck while parading his age-diminished abilities...again, not your typical rock star...integrity...

I think most fans secretly hoped for one more studio album, but now even that won't happen. Sad news indeed.

Very sad news.

Saw them at the Apollo in June 1980 on the 10th and 11th as a mate was a big fan but after seeing both gigs I was converted.

Neil Peart was on another level, the drum solos were incredible.

This was the set list.

I feel lucky to have been an Apollo regular from 1977 to 1983(ish), and saw some of the ‘greats’ there, in their prime. Rush, Thin Lizzy with Phil Lynott, Queen with Freddie Mercury.... could go on all day.

An absolute hero of a man. His drumming was a complete palette of technique, timing, power, groove and chops. A massively under appreciated lyricist to boot. The world lost a good one.

I mentioned a few months ago that I had just finished reading Neil’s book ‘Ghost Rider’. A hard read at times, given the reason he was out on the road on his motorbike, but definitely worth reading, if you are a Rush fan. The guy was an extremely talented writer. I won’t go into detail about what I liked and didn’t like so much in the book, to avoid being a spoiler, if anyone who hasn’t read it decides to do so.

Absolutely gutted when i heard this. He was in my opinion the best drummer/percussionist ever. Favourite solo was Rush in Rio ( Oh Baterista) just brilliant.

I won’t go into detail about what I liked and didn’t like so much in the book, to avoid being a spoiler, if anyone who hasn’t read it decides to do so.

I bought the book a few years ago and found it an excellent read. I'm assuming you've read his other books?

I haven’t read the others yet. I did find ‘Ghost Rider’ an excellent read, but a couple of things I found a bit irritating. I had to keep reminding myself what the bloke had went through.
